Transfer to Business Schools?

What are my chances to Top business schools? (Georgetown, NYU, USC, CAL, Johns Hopkins, etc..)

I am currently a freshmen at a JC in 2nd semester. I am looking to transfer out in 2 years.

GPA: 4.00 at the end of this year. I am positive I will have 4.0 throughout the whole 2 years.
EC:
Internship at a Real Estate Company(LOR Promised by CEO)
Business Club - Member
Alpha Gamma Sigma Honors Club - Member
Student Government - Director of Finance
Honors Transfer Program - Member
College English Ministries(Church) - President
Church - Worship Leader

Units after this semester: 33?

Please help!

Please feel free to recommend schools that match as well! :D

Can you tell us your SAT score? Maybe you should consider retaking it before transferring out.

Looking good, I think you have a great shot if you keep maintaining your grades and write a good essay. Last time I checked, JHU’s Carey Business School was not accredited yet since it was just established in 2007. This means you might not be able to transfer your credits from Carey Business School, especially if you decide to apply to graduate schools in the future. Is your major finance??

JHU’s undergrad business program is accredited and worth looking into though it might not be the best fit for everyone as it is located in the same building downtown with their mba program(in fact you might even get to take some of the mba classes as part of your undergrad program). The program is only a few years old and the Dean is the previous dean of USC’s business school. If you are looking for a traditional campus experience aka usc/georgetown then it would not be the school for you.

How did you find out it was accredited? I dont see John Hopkins here…

I’ve never took the SAT’s in high school. I was a 4.0+ student until I became a junior. My father got extremely ill and it depleted my grades until I graduated… If I stay two years in jc, I’ve heard that they dont really look at my high school grades and if I’ve never took SATs I really dont have to. What are my chances to other business schools? My top choices are NYU, USC, Georgetown. How am I looking? My major is Business Administration/Management. I might be interested in International Business, but not sure for now. ^^

@Charlie - I just had to double check but you are right, they are in the middle of their review still(I forget about the length of time required). The MBA program should be fully accredited by fall 2010 and from the sounds of it the entire school by fall 2011. With that, the carey program is meant for people who transfer over after completing two years elsewhere so only the major courses would not transfer. At this point I’d still advise someone go elsewhere if they can get accepted to places like nyu and georgetown.

University of Michigan–Ann Arbor
UC-Berkeley
UNC-CH
University of Texas–Austin
UVA
Indiana University - Bloomington

The schools that I have listed above have excellent Business Admin/ Management programs. If you have a 3.7 - 4.0 after 2 years then you should be very competitive in the top business schools. Just make sure you take the right classes while in JC, for example: Some schools might require you to take Calculus I before you apply.
Typical lower level business classes: Accounting I and II, Micro and Macro Econ, Statistics, Communications Class, and Calculus I. Anyway all the best man!

How are my chances for Georgetown, CAL, USC, NYU? Assuming that my GPA will be the same, and considering I’ve never took the SATs. I will be taking Calculus I this coming fall. Since I am applying this fall… will this keep me from applying to those schools? Or will those schools honor the fact that I will be taking it as I apply.

@Charlie - At the end of my 2nd yr I will have completed up to Calc II, Micro/Macro Econ. Account 1&2 all that good stuff.

That’s kind of the exact question that lies in my hands too sometimes.

you might have to submit SAT’s to Georgetown…[Georgetown University- Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://uadmissions.georgetown.edu/applying_transfer_appchecklist.cfm)

When do you plan to apply? Fall 2011?

@Charlie - I’m not exactly sure. When SHOULD I apply? I am very confused if I am applying this fall or next fall…

I think you should apply after completing 60 credits. Since you will have 33 credits after this semester and assuming you don’t take any summer classes, you will be scheduled to reach the 60 credits in spring 2011. Therefore I would recommend applying for the fall 2011 semester. You will definitely be a very strong candidate especially if your GPA is still the same. You can also try to call the business departments in schools that you are interested in, and ask about what they look for when reviewing transfer applicants. Some schools like Upenn(Wharton) prefer transfers to apply after completing 1 yr of college coursework (30 credits). So it depends, but typically they would pay less attention to your high school performance after completing 2 years of college work (60 credits).

As we’re close to being past the deadline to apply for many of the schools you might want to look at the transfer pre-requisites required for all of the schools and then tailor next year’s class schedule around knocking out as many of those as possible. If you’ve already taken the macro/micro econ, accounting 1&2, calc 1, english 1&2, then next work on knocking out transferable general ed courses.

To be honest, even with my gpa at 4.00 and my ECs being pretty good I really don’t know which schools I should be aiming for. I really don’t want to aim too high. Which schools will be in my range if my gpa stays at 4.00 and my ECs stay the same if not better? And yes! I definitely agree that I should apply for the Fall 2011. By the time I apply, I should have finished Calc1, micro/macro econ, accounting 1/2, and eng 1/2.

If you keep up your gpa and your ec’s. You have a good chance at all the schools you mentioned above. USC, NYU, and others. Just keep up your hard work.
