I'm currently taking a summer physics class which I'm not sure that i can get a B or not. I learned nothing from this class, 'cause my prof is really lazy.

I have 3.9/4.0 GPA, 44/60 units, and I'm planning on transferring to Cal or UCLA (mechanical engineering).

Should I drop that class? I really want to keep my GPA as high as possible. How a W affects my transcript?

If you can not get a B in your class I would drop the course. A C would put a decent dent into your GPA on top of that if physics is one of your prerequisites for your major it would hurt your chances. I transfered to Cal with two Ws and I was told by a Berkeley rep that unless you have excessive Ws they will not hurt your chances. Either way you would have a good shot even if you did not take the W, but since Berkeley and UCLA is competitive for engineering I would take the W.

If it's one of your prereqs then it could possibly hurt you, but normally a few Ws aren't going to hurt you at all. Definitely stick with the class if you can get a B, but I would probably drop it if you think you'll get anything lower than that.

Do you always have to explain your Ws, even if you only got one? I assume there's a small area on the app where you can put down little notes like this?

Yeah, kind of in the same situation. I got one W for a summer class that I took after my junior year in high school, when I had no intention of going to CC.

W's do not really affect you at all. I had something like 8 or 9 W's and I still got into UCLA. Like others have said, just make sure you explain it on your application and you will be fine. I will take a couple W's over a few C's any day. From what I have heard from other posters on here, excessive W's really only affect you when you apply to graduate school.
