anyone hear anything from Columbia yet??? I got a weird piece of mail from them asking whether I would prefer to be considered for the College of General Studies or for Columbia College. Anyone really know the difference???

Well the difference is the College of General Studies is for the non-traditional students (usually those who have been out of school for more than a year). Other than that, I don't really know the difference, though I think students from College of General Studies may not be guaranteed housing or whatever. But I'm not sure.

I'm getting antsy about it. I don't know when we receive the decision.

I was thinking about transferring if I'm not taken off of the waitlist, but I was just wondering how you would ask a prof at your current school "Hey, I really hate this school. I wanna go somewhere else. Can you write me a rec?" It just seems like that how it would come out to them. Is it easy getting a rec? Are they understanding most of the time?

In my experience, it seems like they were. It helps if you're conscientous and organized with everything beforehand, and if they ask, you can try to give some of your reasons . . . it's not the most enjoyable experience, but if you want to go, you shouldn't let a moment of awkwardness hold you back . . .

I told one of my professors that I wanted to transfer and asked if she could write me a recommendation, and she was enthusiastic about writing the recommendation for me and said she understood why I might want to transfer. Also, I'm applying to the school she went to (Brown) so that might make her more inclined to be excited for me. Anyway, the other professors I asked for recommendations had no problem writing them. You don't go up to them and say "I hate this school" because often times that's not the reason you want to transfer. You just ask for a recommendation and usually they don't ask why you're thinking about transferring.

I never said that is what you would say, but it seems like that is what they would hear. Or at least I meant that. First sentence confused it a little I guess.

anyone receive a decision yet??

A friend of mine at Conn Coll was evidently rejected by Columbia a couple days ago. He's absolutely brilliant and he's done internships in Georgia (the country) and he'll be in Moscow doing economic research all summer. At first I couldn't imagine how Columbia could possibly not admit him as a transfer, but then I realized why: He's an economics major.

If you're a poli sci, history, or econ major, you'll probably have a tough time. If you're a film studies or religion major, you may have an easier time.

yes, decisions were already sent

hmm, I haven't received mine yet... hopefully tomorrow:D

Don't we receive a phone call from them if we're accepted first before we get it in the mail. Thats what happened to me with Wesleyan University, they called me on saturday to offer me a spot. Anyone knows how it works for Columbia?

They sent decisions by email last wednesday, and many received actual packages today, monday.

I never received an email, a call, or a package (but maybe I'll get that last one soon--hopefully today... I live in Vegas, so it might take a while). Anywho, I'm sure I was rejeceted, so that might explain the dearth of notifications :(.

If you haven't received anything yet, you should call, and I'm sure they'll tell you over the phone. If you are accepted, you should be notified right away, as you're not given much time to reply.

This year's "statistic": 60 people admitted as transfers out of 1200 applicants.

ouch, then I don't even want to call... I was rejected from Cornell and U of Chicago (high school grades and SATs suck!). Well, thanks for all the advice, anyways :D
