Im currently a freshman at a State University of New York, and I am looking to transfer next fall. This particular school was not what I thought it would be, and I am looking for a college with a little more emphasis on academics. I am an English major, and Im not too concerned with having the typical college experience; I am more interested in finding a college with stellar academics (and an affordable price!). I have recently been looking at some of the CUNY schools. My question is, what are the professors, course offerings, internship opportunities like at some of these schools, particularly Hunter College? Ive gotten some mixed messages about it, and Im wondering if the college is considered challenging in regards to academics. Thanks!

Being in CUNY Hunter, I’d definitely say this is not much of an “academic” school, as most people here seem content with doing enough just to get by. Then again, it’s all based on perspective, and I’m looking to transfer to some more competitive schools like USC because of the lack of education here.
I can’t offer much insight to profs or courses as it’s only my first term here, but the profs I’ve had have generally shown a negative attitude towards Hunter, with 2 separate professors mentioning the bureaucracy of the college and another mentioning “there are way too many required gen. ed. courses here.”
Which SUNY do you currently attend?

I go to SUNY New Paltz right now. I feel like a lot of students here are more interested in partying than studying. I can’t afford to go to any prestigious private schools, as much as I would love to. Basically it comes down to the fact that I love to learn, and I am trying to find a college with like-minded people. Do you know anything about the Honors program in the CUNY system? I know one of them is just for freshman students, but are there others? Are they worth looking into?

The Honors program is definitely a step up from regular Hunter, but the one I know about (Macaulay Honors) is for freshman only, and are generally occupied by people who got high grades in poor high schools, so I wouldn’t rank it much higher than regular Hunter in terms of the people you meet. However, Hunter is still the best CUNY academically, and if you’re financially limited it would be a better bang for your buck than the $20K for a SUNY.

It doesn’t seem as though CUNY Hunter has a favorable reputation. I know two people who are desperately unhappy there and are looking to transfer to SUNY New Paltz. I understand that you are looking for a more academic environment. My son is a transfer at New Paltz and is having trouble finding like minded friends too…lots of nice people, but he has only found a few that he has respect for. If you have a strong gpa, what about Geneseo?

I actually haven’t thought about Geneseo, but I will definitely look into it. Thanks!

I’m transferring out of Geneseo. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone from the city, or anyone looking for an intellectual environment.

I had gotten accepted to York College and attended the summer classes there as well. But I was not financially clear to register for class and I wasn’t aware nor was I informed by the Financial Aid office that this was the problem. When I tried to register, they simply told me I was too late and had to go to a community college for a semester and I could transfer back or transfer anywhere else. My main goal was to transfer out of York in a year anyways to Queens College or City College. So now I’m going to QCC for a semester My friend who got accepted to John Jay had a similar problem and has to go to QCC as well. Now I was just wondering how many credits I need, or what gpa I have to maintain to get into CCNY, QC, or Hunter after a semester?:
