Transfer to Highly Selective College

Are there any highly selective colleges that like accepting community college students or that accept a decent amount of them for the fall semester? I am a community college student with a 3.9 GPA and a strong HS Record who is looking to transfer into a top 100 university...

Anyone? please help…

What was your SAT? Did you apply and get accepted at any four year colleges? Typical successful transfer applicants were accepted initially but turned them down.

I don’t know what state you are from, but most state flagships are very receptive to successful community college transfers, also many private schools, as well. I mean, not Hahvahd or Yale, but top fity, top 100.

Do you need financial aid?

Youu should have a guidance counselor at your community college and they can help you with this.

Good luck.

My SAT was an 1180 (CR+ Math) and my average was a 96% with several AP’s. Out of high school I got accept into Wake Forest (SAT Optional) Syracuse University, Fordham, Marquette, University of Miami, Miami University of Ohio and a few other smaller schools. I turned them down in order to save money via the community college option. Besides these schools listed, are there any other schools that I have a chance getting accepted into from my CC?

I’m from New York State. I attend Monroe Community College. My current GPA is a 3.9

Have you considered Geneseo?

I really like that school. It would be very affordable for you.

A lot of schools will take you with that record. What size do you want? How big of an issue is money?

ETA: if you go to college search, at the top, there is a subforum for New York Colleges. This might be useful for you, if you don’t already know about it.

Both SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Geneseo are both good backup options but I have always wanted a school with division 1 basketball such as Georgetown, but I realize that a school like that may be a stretch. Money is not too big of an issue an long as I get some sort of financial aid…

Well, I think you will have a lot of options to choose from, but the best gauge of where kids from your community college go, with your record, really will be the counselor at Monroe. They will be able to assist you in lots of ways in this process and I would get in contact with them.

Good luck, and keep up the good work.

Depending on your major and what courses you’ve taken … Cornell’s CALS has a guaranteed transfer agreement with Monroe CC.

[Transfer Agreements](http://cals.cornell.edu/cals/prospective/admissions/transfer/external/agreements.cfm)

That is a great agreement that my CC has with Cornell, but the majority of the majors within CALS pertain to the natural sciences or require a large amounts of work in the natural sciences. Science is my weak point so I’m not sure if an agreement of this type would suit me well. Are there any other agreements outside of the SUNY system for someone majoring in the social sciences…such as political science?

I don’t think NY is a member of any tuition exchange programs among the states.

You’ll get the opportunity to take out Stafford loans. That won’t make much of a dent in any college’s COA. Maybe you should stay in-state for undergrad and look OOS for grad school?

Dan–

The agreement with Cornell includes majors in communication, Development sociology and information science. I wouldn’t rule out communications if you would rather go to this kind of school than major in poli sci. fwiw.

Good luck

Here is the link to the development sociology dept at Cornell: <a href=“Global Development | CALS”>Global Development | CALS;

If you are interested in politics, this might interest you, as well.

Here is a link to what you can do with a communications major:http://as.cornell.edu/academics/careers/explore/communications.cfm

I think you should at least apply there.

Does anyone think I have a chance of getting accepted into a school such as Georgetown or UNC Chapel Hill? I know that students from my CC have gotten accepted in UNC Chapel Hill but I’m not sure about Georgetown…
