Transfer to In-State

My daughter didn't apply to UVa last year, but she did apply to VaTech and was not accepted. It was a little bit of a surprise because I'm a Hokie grad. Her SAT was only 1200 and GPA was a 3.5. She was however, extremely involved in high school (lots of leadership positions and community service) and is also very involved at the University of Maryland now. She made the Dean's List (has a 3.65 gpa) in the fall and wants to transfer back to Virginia at either UVa, VaTech or William & Mary. Will her EC's help the fact that she didn't have a good SAT score or excellent gpa? And is her current gpa high enough to get her in? She wants to major in Political Science and says she can get some very good recommendations.

its tough to say. i am in a similar situation. im a res. of illinois and didnt get into UIUC at first so I had to go to Indiana. it was always my plan after that to work hard at IU and transfer to UIUC after 1 or 2 years. my high school gpa wasnt that great, but at Indiana I made it into the honors college and am very involved and blah blah blah. now im just waiting for UIUC to get back to me, bc theres no way im coming back to IU next year (personal, financial)
I hope everything works out for your daughter!

Thanks ayudell! I understand about the personal and financial aspects. My daughter would like to get back to her friends here, even though she has made some great friends at UMD. She had some small scholarships, but nothing huge so cost is a factor with us as well. How is your gpa now? Are you applying for transfer anywhere else? I hope you get in at UIUC!

i have a 3.718 at IU. i told myself if i didnt hear back from UIUC by tomorrow, then I would go ahead and submit my application to UI Chicago. i just didn't want to have to spend the extra application fee. I really don't want to bounce around different schools, though, so I'm hoping for the best with UIUC.

sounds to me like your daughter was a cheerleader in highschool. i think her best bet was getting in from h.s where she had a lot of pull..her charm and good looks might have worked in your small hometown, but that crapdoesnt work in college!

No, she wasn't a cheerleader. She was an officer in the student govt. for several years and even president of the student body her senior year. I don't call that crap!

ayudell - It sounds like you won't have any problems with your gpa.
