Hello,

I am a high school senior getting ready to go to Franklin and Marshall College for school next year. I have recently realized for a variety of reasons that JHU is where I really want to go. My dream is to transfer there, but obviously I understand how low the acceptance rate is. Below are my relevant stats. Any information you could provide me would be extremely helpful.

Hispanic Male

3.4 high school gpa

SAT- 1200

Three IB classes, two regular classes, and an independent study arts class.

I've also held two jobs, one as a photographer's assistant and one working part time for a coffee shop.

Most of my college counselors have told me that if I have high enough grades first and second semester, there is a chance I could.

Of course there is a chance. But my advice is that you should not even think about transferring until you’ve given F&M a chance or you will guarantee that your freshman year is miserable. F&M is a good school–go in with a positive attitude, work and play hard, enjoy yourself, and strive to do your best. If, after at least a semester, you’ve done well and are not satisfied–then think about transferring. You might discover that you love F&M, and that you do not really have to put yourself through the rigors of the transfer process.

I agree. There are definitely transfer students here but the process is hard. I really hope you end up loving F&M, one of my good friends is an alum and loved it and got many opportunities from being there. =]

I agree - don’t jump ship until you know that where you’re off to isn’t a great place for you. You’ll find many colleges aren’t too different and F&M is a great place to be.

I agree with the other posters. I’m a strong believer in the fact that you can be happy at any college if you make the most of it. Go to F&M and give it a REAL chance - don’t spend your time comparing it to another school or avoiding getting invested because you’re “transferring anyway.” I think you’ll enjoy yourself if you give it a shot.

Another thing to keep in mind - transfer admissions is FAR more competitive than freshman admissions. The admit rate is down around 7%, compared to 20-27% for freshmen. Particularly if you were already rejected from Hopkins (no idea if you were), don’t hold your breath. Who knows - you may be a perfect transfer applicant. But let it ride for a year and see where you’re at then.

Good luck to you!

I also echo all the rest of the advice you have gotten here. F&M is a great school and you should spend the next few months getting really excited for your chance to attend such a wonderful University. If at the end of your first semester, and after fully committing yourself to F&M, you feel like transferring is still a good idea, then you should investigate the option. That is why many transfer application deadlines are in March, so that students have time to experience their current college.
