transfer to liberal arts colleges

Hey all.

I have a friend that wants to go to a top liberal arts college. He picked Amherst, which is a fine goal, but I'm guessing that you need to take the ACT/SAT's to even have a chance. I honestly know nothing about transfers to liberal arts schools, let alone out of state.

Any help would be great.

He wants top notch, out of state. I don't want to crush his dreams, but here's his situation (not too much, but enough to get a good idea).

Very low HS GPA, I mean... VERY very low.
Current GPA (plans on applying this fall to schools) is 3.2
Attends California Community College
Philosophy Major
No EC's
No SAT/ACT scores
No AP's

I mean, from this already, I have a good idea of whether he stands a chance. Please don't be harsh about it, I understand that there are better students out there than him. He knows what he wants now, I just hope that he'll get a second chance.

He will definitely have to take the SATs. The only good LAC that comes to mind that doesn't require it is Oxy. It looks like a longshort for Amherst, though. Maybe he should look at Reed.

he WILL NOT get into Amherst, or any of the top 20 LAC's with those stats. obviously, he would have to take the SAT/ACT's just to apply to transfer, but without working on the rest of his resume, and get a really high test score, i'm afraid he better lower his expectations a little.

Sarah Lawrence does not require SAT/ACT, but may still be a reach.

Bates College doesn't require SAT's, and my best friend had a 3.5, no EC'S, but did take a fair amount of AP's in high school. His geographical location helps a lot when applying to certain new england LAC's. He has no shot at Amherst though. He should look at Oberlin, Reed, Whitman, maybe Skidmore? They're all good schools, and are more open to transfer students.
