Transfer to MIT

Hello guys! I would like to transfer to MIT after a year from another university. I would like to study electrical engineering.
What courses should I take in the first year of my university so that I had more chances to be admitted to MIT?

There is no “more chances.” I looked at your profile and you are international, so the overall probability is around 1%.

In terms of academics, MIT defines this:
http://mitadmissions.org/apply/transfer/before

To not lose too much time, you should have:

  • single variable Calculus (=18.01)
  • multi-variable Calculus (=18.02)
  • some Chemistry (=5.11x)
  • some Biology (=7.01x)
  • humanities

However, for many it’s not really a “second chance” to apply. MIT is still looking at academics and **fit.

Fit looks different for a transfer student than for a freshman applicant.

Likelihood is that if you haven’t significantly changed anything in your application, you should expect no change of verdict.

I have names of at least 4 successful transfers and I have described in other posts. So without naming them, let’s see.

Person #1
Originally from TX
Thought she wanted to go into a New England LAC
not much support at the LAC for Engineering and not a lot of science activity
Dean’s list at the LAC
Also very involved in music (vielle, violin, voice) (she has segments on youtube)
She has a software portfolio
Applied to MIT: transferred, currently a rising junior (finished sophomore year at MIT), Civil and Environmental Engineering
Think she was involved in recycling and robotics at MIT.

Person #2
Ukrainian (International)
European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2014, age 16, 25 points, Gold Medal (#8 overall)
International Mathematical Olympiad 2014, age 16, Silver medal (#50 in the world)
EGMO 2015, age 17, 40/42 points, ranked #3 overall (#1 was Danielle Wang who is at MIT)
IMO 2015, age 17, #37 in the world, gold medal
I don’t know the rest of her extracurriculars (I don’t read Ukrainian and my Russian is rusty to the point that it would take me several hours to decipher)

Person #3
Ukrainian (International)
EGMO 2013 (Age 15) silver medal, #14 overall
EGMO 2014 (Age 16), Gold medal #5 overall
EGMO 2015 (Age 17), Gold Medal, #4 overall
IMO 2015 (Age 17), Silver Medal, #58 in the world
IOL 2015 (Age 17), Bronze

Again, I don’t know the rest of her extracurriculars although probably photography.

The MIT IMO community knew that #2 and #3 were coming.

Person #4
Indian (International) (and it was all over Indian news)
2015 IPhO silver medalist
2014 APhO Bronze medalist
2015 APhO gold medalist

Amusing … lots of olympiad related people at Alpha Delta Phi (J. Mohapatra, J. Gao, D. Pramanik, B. Serafimov, S. Das).

In any case, yes, extracurriculars and so on are part of the fit. There is an additional part of fit: academic need / purpose of transfer.
