Hello everyone and anyone,
I am a sophomore at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, currently undeclared but transferring into the mathematics program within the next week or two. I was looking to apply to transfer to Northwestern University for Fall 2019 and was wondering how I was looking. If there is any information that I am missing, feel free to say so and I will respond with it! Any guidance would be appreciated!
ACADEMICS:
HIGH SCHOOL:
ACT: 30
SAT: Never took it
GPA: (Unweighted) 3.5/4… (Weighted) 4.4/4
EXTRACURRICULARS: Performed with Jazz Combo, Film Club President, Extensive volunteer work outside of school, Guitar lessons, very active with schools music program
COLLEGE:
GPA: After this semester, 3.24/4, but a large part of that is a 2.93/4 first semester GPA, but I had a somewhat substantial health scare that kind of messed me up academically. Also, I have taken a very wide array of classes, Calculus 1-3, Set Theory, Computer Science, Philosophy, Music, World Literature, Cinema Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Economics
EXTRACURRICULARS: Mens Glee Club for 3 semesters, helped tutor a few people in calculus courses (However that was not through a club or anything)
WORK EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIPS:
Volunteered at a ticket office at an Opera House, Worked at a hardware store working as an electrical sales representative, performed theater up until high school, volunteered at a nursing home.
I am participating in the Spring 2019 Disney College Program at Walt Disney World, working Bell Service Dispatch, basically managing who sends luggage where at a hotel.
CAREER HOPES: Hopefully graduate school after Undergrad for Biomathematics, and get into medicine
WHY TRANSFER: I feel that many of the classes at UIUC are much too big, and I feel that Northwestern’s 6:1 student to faculty ratio versus UIUC’s 20:1 would be much more beneficial to my learning experience. I also feel that being closer to Chicago would offer me many more professional development opportunities than Urbana will (obviously). Also, as a grad school hopeful, I feel that Northwestern would prepare me for that better, especially considering my medical field aspirations. There are a few personal reasons as well, like being closer to home and things like that, but the academic reasons are much more important to me.
Also not sure if it matters, but I am from Chicago, my father is a city worker. Im not sure if they factor in-state or anything like that into their judgement but better to have that in there than not…
