Transfer to NU

I applied to Northwestern last Fall and did not get in. I am currently a first year at UCSD. My major is human biology. I was accepted with Honors and earned Provost's Honors on my transcript. I have a 3.78 and will hopefully maintain that by the time I apply to transfer. My HS GPA was 3.7 unweighted. I am an AP Scholar with distinction. My SAT score was 2200.

I have always wanted to go to NU and am unhappy at UCSD. I would like to know what my chances are?

Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Sarah786-As you have always wanted to go to NU, and you have continued to apply yourself at UCSD, I think you should apply as a transfer. You know NU is tough to get into-whether someone has a 4.0 or a 3.78-still tough. But, I think you have a good chance, and should go for it! G’Luck!

I don’t know much about the transfer process, but if you show your passion for NU, your grades and scores seem to be very good. I know in the transfer process the statement of reason for transfer is very important, so make sure to have a very excellent essay.

Good luck :)

What do you guys think I can do in the meantime in terms of extracirriculars?
How can I show my passion for Northwestern specifically?

Your passion is something that you have to develop on your own.
I wouldn’t necessarily worry about extracurriculars… I transferred without ANY at my previous institution. Just had a lot in high school.

ye i agree, gpa matters a lot more than extracurriculars and i also think your chances are good. but try to get your gpa up even more if you can.

You sound like a great transfer candidate - try to go above-and-beyond on your application to show interest - include any supplemental items you think may help (letters of congratulations, etc.)

PS on your admissions essays DO NOT write that you want to transfer because you are “unhappy” at UCSD. Instead, focus on the POSITIVES of what you’ve accomplished there and try to extend the narrative to how Northwestern will better help you continue in that direction. Good luck, I think you have a great chance!

PS in regards to what these other posters are saying - a 3.78 is a FINE GPA, especially considering I have heard UCSD is difficult and deflated. Contrary to their advice I would recommend investing additional time in contributing to the campus (and thus boosting your ‘full package’) while you are there instead of trying to marginally improve an already good 3.78 GPA.
