Transfer to Ohio State

I'm currently a junior who just took a semester off following a deployment (I enlisted in the Army to pay for college). I was at a small liberal arts college near pittsburgh with a $40,000 price tag per year I simply can't afford anymore.

Anyways, I'm trying to transfer to Ohio State. I have 58 credits and my GPA averaged around a 3.3, but the last semester I was there, I got an F and a D, bringing my cumulative down to a 2.7ish. Both of those were classes I missed final exams in, due to deployment.

26 on the ACT's.

I'm a German major and placed at the 300 level my freshman year.. I've taken nothing but 400 level classes since then. From 9th grade until now, I've never had anything lower than an A in German, so my major GPA is probably a 4.0 or higher. Only need a few more classes to fulfill my major requirements.

I played college football for 2 years, was in the German club and college republicans, also in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Will they overlook the last semester because of deployment? It's absolutely killing my cumulative GPA and really hurting my chances due to circumstances beyond my control. Also, will being a veteran help with being admitted to a state university?

My last college was pretty selective (Washington and Jefferson), so will they take that into consideration? I have no idea how the transfer application process works.

If my chances aren't that great, are there any other colleges you'd recommend?

Thanks!

should probably clarify.. I was in the military before entering college, it was an Iraq deployment that screwed up my grades during the last semester I was there.. (gotta love how they call you up halfway through so you can't withdraw or drop the classes without losing thousands of dollars)

I'm a PA resident applying for the spring trimester btw.

My sister goes there too, something I made sure to mention in the personal statement.

please help me out here with a chance! I'll return the favor.
majoris23 is online now

IMO, I think you have a so-so to decent chance if you explain your reasons for those two classes well. How were your grades in those before your final exam?

I wrote a pretty strong personal statement and described the situation as best I could.. they were in the B range prior to missing those finals.. It's not only that I missed finals, but several week-long periods throughout the semester for training.. like I said, I had a 400 level class for my major I needed to focus on instead.

I've been financially independent and also had to hold a job throughout that year.. hopefully they consider that as well?

It sucks, one semester is ruining my chances!
