Hey guys. I know lots of people here are trying to be admitted as freshmen. But actually I really want to transfer to Rice. So please give me some advises!!!Thanks LOL..
Im currently a sophomore in Penn State, which is a huge public school. My family plans to set up a small business in Houston so I wish I could study there.
Here are some positive things about me:
Biology major;
GPA is 3.81; SAT 2060
Bilingual in English and Chinese, speak French fluently
VP of Chinese Undergraduate Student Association; Deans list (07 till now)
My GPA in high school was 3.92 and I got plenty of honors as well.
I was exchanged to England a year when I was junior in high school.
Proficient in playing the piano and violin
Here are some negative things
Im 100% Chinese and Im an international student. My parent is working on the green card but I wont get it until next year.
No sports team experience (some people just bad at sports
.)
Im going to be a junior in next fall semester ( is that too old for transfer?)
Most of my internships are in China. But I did do some Red Cross hours in England.
Thats about everything. Im going to apply for the transfer of spring 2010. Please tell me anything that you have in your mind. Thanks again!!!

I think your chances are good; you have a decent GPA and have great leadership experience. I don’t think not being involved in sports will affect you; I didn’t do any athletics in high school and was admitted as a first year student.

However, although your chances are good, I can’t guarantee you anything. I don’t know the rigor of the transfer application process, maybe a transfer student can explain that. Good luck!

By the way, Rice likes international students… I don’t know about Asian international students though because there are already a lot of Asians going to Rice.

You just finished your sophomore year at Penn State, right? If so, I think it’s too late to apply to transfer. Most colleges when allowing transfers to enroll, require at least 2 years of enrollment–that is, you can transfer after your sophomore year (BUT you need to apply that spring semester of your sophomore year), or transfer after freshman year (BUT you need to apply to transfer that spring semester of your freshman year).

You needed to apply your spring semester of sophomore year, then receive decisions in April/May before enrolling as a transfer (provided Rice accepts you) for the fall of your junior year.

Not quite sure about Rice’s policy on this, you should double-check via the website and/or calling admissions.

If you want to transfer for the spring semester you need to apply by October. Look for the update to this document coming out soon. http://www.futureowls.rice.edu/images/futureowls/TransferInstructions0809.pdf
Note you will have to plan on an additional semester:
“Transfer applicants should be aware
that a student must complete at least four
semesters of course work (60 semester
hours) as a full-time student at Rice to be
eligible for a bachelor’s degree.”

Thanks slik nik!I thought my citizenship would affect my application. But you really give me some hopes tho.

I understand what you mean. The deadline for Fall 2009 is due on March 2009.But I’m shooting for the admission of Spring 2010,which is due on Oct 2009.So I think I still have time right?

I know you want to transfer, but I actually think it would be better if you go to Rice for grad school. I mean you have to spend another semester at Rice if you transfer. So I think you should take the honors classes at Penn State and finish your undergrad there and then apply for Rice for grad school. It saves time and money.

However, Rice tends to be an undergraduate focused institution… except for engineering, Rice is not known for its grad programs (same thing with Princeton). At least that’s the vibe I got after researching, visiting, and deciding to enroll at this university.

do you not like Penn State? or is this guided by your family moving?

I don’t hate Penn State. It’s a nice public school with lots of friendly people. But the classes are usually huge, around 300 people sitting in one lecture room. It’s fun in the freshmen year since you would have many new friends but once getting into major,I tend to study in private school cuz I really need instructor’s attention. Also,I m not a big fan of football stuff. So Penn State is not that attracted to me.
Family moving is just part of the reason tho.

300 in one lecture room!!!
Oh my!!!
yeah if you willing to spend a extra semester, by all means transfer. You seem like a person who will admire the fabulous 5:1 student faculty ration (although the average class size is about 15 students)

I will go to penn state too but my gpa is 86.5 with honors and ap. i might not get into rice:( hope you do!

86.5? out of what?

I’m pretty sure out of
100

It’s like 86.5% average (I know some schools do that)

ah… i had a % too

i got in as a freshman with an 82%. then again i graduated second in the class. they graded real hard

i failed math one semester senior year… had a 32% which was the second highest grade again :x stupid school

^lol
I guess you really didn’t like your school

i mean, they would fail people just because. it was crazy

Good thing your in Rice

yep. made it :)
