Transfer to Stanford

Hi everyone I was wondering how difficult it is to transfer to Stanford. Let me know if I have any chances of getting in...
I am an undergrad at UC Berkeley
Sophomore and majoring in Public health... as we all know berkeley is hella hard school and during my freshman year I didnt do so well in some classes such as Chem. My current GPA is 3.3
So help me out. i really really want to go to Stanford. What should I do to get in.. do you think I would be able to get in?

Thanks a bunch for your help,

-Wanna be Stanford Student

It's really hard to tell by what you gave (just your GPA, major, and year). Also, I'm under the impression that Stanford would be harder than Berkeley, so I'm wondering what your motivations are... what do you like about Stanford so much?

http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/applying/1_3_transfers.html This is the place to start in your quest to transfer. The people on this board probably have less experience with gaging how competitive a transfer applicant is. Here's some info from that site:

Typically, we admit between 8% and 10% of the 1300-1400 students who apply each year. For this reason, only students with very strong academic credentials are encouraged to apply - those with cumulative college grade point averages in the 3.5 to 4.0 range and SAT verbal/critical reading and math scores in the 650 to 800 ranges.

If it's your dream, go for it... but do take the time to evaluate why you want to be at Stanford.

thanks celestial605..well i dont think any school is as hard as berkeley. berkeley's undergrad is really really hard bc they have a bunch of weeder classes.. and there are so many kids in one class and they make the grading impossible to get an A....
what other info should i give?
I really really want to go to Stanford because it is much closer to my home and i totally appose how berkeley's classes are and how they dont care at all about their students. stanford is much smaller than berkeley and they have a medical school which i love.
let me know what else i am supposed to do...
thank you

I don't have any first-hand knowledge of Berkeley's classes, but I'm pretty sure celestial is right. I really don't think Stanford will be significantly easier than Berkeley in any way. BTW, a lot of Stanford classes are graded on curves also. We don't necessarily have "weeder" classes but if you're looking to get easy A's, look somewhere else.

Anyway, if you can't figure out how to apply for transfer admission on your own, I'd say your odds of getting in aren't very good...

^That was pretty harsh. He's just asking for some advice. Help him out. Y

Maybe I just misconstrued star's meaning when he/she said "let me know what else i am supposed to do..."

I'm not trying to be overly harsh but it seems like the OP is harboring some misconceptions.

I can see Jimmy's point. Star, I definitely advise you to start out by going to the link I pasted above. You should take initiative and do the research to see what you need to do and what your chances are.

Jimmy is also right that Stanford has some weeder classes, but I believe that's mostly in the pre-med domain. The plus is that our professors are in general awesome and do care about students. For example, they love for students to come to office hours, whether you want to discuss theory or just ask a question about a concept in lecture. The administration also cares; they have focus groups where they ask students for their opinions on things such as resources for student groups on campus.

I hope you don't want to transfer to Stanford because a) it's closer to home and b) you think it will be easier. I have not taken classes at both Stanford and Berkeley, but I do find Stanford's classes very challenging, and I feel that Stanford must be ranked higher in the nation and the world for good reasons. I hope there are other reasons why you would like to transfer. Stanford's a wonderful school, and most of us love it, so we'd love to share that love with you... but I for one don't think you should try to come based on the reasoning you've presented so far.

By the way, there's a study that shows that people with, say, 3.3 at Stanford actually score higher on LSAT than those with 3.3 at Berkeley on average. I have also seen prelaw/premed data to find that's the case (i.e. on average, students with, say, 3.4 at Stanford score higher on MCAT than those with 3.4 at Berkeley). If Berkeley is a lot harder to get good grades, it should be the other way around. What that tells me is while Stanford may have larger portion of A given out, there's also larger fraction of very smart students. The two balance out.

To be a successful transfer applicant you need great stats (which include college GPA), and a good reason for transferring.

It does not look like you have either one.

I wasnt trying to sound stupid... i was wondering if someone already went through this process and if they can help me with it...any advice?
thanks for all of your responses. they are very helpful
