Transfer to Texas Tech University and Scholarships Worries

Hello everyone!
I am a recent community college student graduate (yaay), and I am planning on transferring to Texas Tech University in the fall of 2017 to pursue a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. My concern is that since I am an international student , unless I get a $1000 scholarship per year I would be paying about $20,000 a year. I talked to the scholarship department and they assured me that with my GPA (3.96/4.0) and leadership achievement (I am a phi theta kappa member and officer), I wouldn’t have any issue getting the $6,500/year Scholarship they offer for a duration of two years. Unfortunately, my degree plan would take me three years to complete the bachelor’s in civil engineering because of all the required engineering classes I’ll have to take, and I would have to pay the full amount for my last year. I would like to know if anyone who is an actual or past student at Tech knows of scholarships that I could apply to once I start attending the university that would help me pay as an instate instead of out of state student? Please help me figure this out

Goodluck! I’m a current Engineering Student at Texas Tech and both the Financial Aid and Scholarship office do not care to answer my questions. I am very disapointed with the quality service this school provides. I will say that that they seemed pretty helpful before they got me through the door! There is a lot of confusion between the different departments throughout the University, and employees try and do the bare minimum. I believe this is mostly attributed to Chancellor Duncan. He has a political background and strictly controls the reighns of our Presidents…we lost our last President due to this. I’ve personally had a lot of issues with this school. Faculty is pretty good within the Whitacre College of Engineering, but I wish you the best if you need help outside of the college. Deception seems to be a common theme throughout the Universities operations. I would be cautious of what they tell you.

Thank you very much for the warning. I’m trying my best to talk to as much people going to Tech as possible, because I don’t want to end up in a situation where I can’t pay for school anymore. Plus being an international student, loans are sadly out of the door. Following your experience, It is really sad that school officials can’t be helpful to students attending the university though. And I experienced some of the things that you went through, like when I’m calling the financial aid office for information about scholarships and they redirect me to my intended department, which them refers me back to the financial aid office. It happened to me quite a lot to be Frank. Nonetheless, I am really thankful for your advice and will keep knocking on the door till I get answers.

That’s pretty sad because I just toured the campus and fell in love. But my issue is the fact that there isn’t a lot of scholarship opportunities for transfer students. They only offer three scholarships for transfers and they are if you decide to transfer with 30 transferable hours. I clearly have more than that since I graduated from a community college with an associate degree. My major is Kinesiology and TTU popular major is Kinesiology.
