Transfer to Tisch

Currently I am in the LSP and am planning to major in something like neural science in the CAS. However, if I wanted to switch to Tisch, can I apply as a transfer student and still possibly get in? I was thinking photography as major....

isn’t photography in Steinhardt as a Studio Art major?

I don’t think so… is it part of the BFA studio art? You probably know more than I do since you go there. Is it still possible to transfer?

yeah, it’s a BFA. sorry, i’m not familiar with tisch, i’m a Steinhardt girl.

i’m not familiar with LSP, but couldn’t you use put down tisch as your intended program to transfer into after two years, rather than CAS? you can ask your adviser when you get here, or call the LSP office and ask.

Oh! Sick! This is a bit more of what I was looking for- I might be able to go into photojournalism from this…maybe? Do you have any friends in the program? what’s your major?

i’m a media, culture, communications major in Steinhardt. (and procrastinating like mad, if you can’t tell :-P)

my roommate is only a Studio Art minor, so i don’t know anything in depth about the program. i suspect that with all of the major newspapers and magazines in Manhattan, you could definitely get some sort of photojournalism internship.

I was also looking at your major in Steinhardt. What sort of classes do you take and what career are you thinking about entering? I’m so curious about this school all of a sudden…

Also, I have a housing question. You know how NYU has explorations themes floors for freshman? do they continue for non-freshman? I’m thinking maybe I’ll just live in Goddard Hall the first year and then do explorations or something next year. Is that possible or is it only for freshman? Last question(s) : do you know of any Rubin people who are in “through the global lens”? I want to do that floor but I’m hesitant because I might end up with all the crazy photography people while I’m just beginning. Yeah, I’m kind of confused and scattered.

Haha procrastination…oh goodness tell me about it. I have an AP Government exam tomorrow morning for which I have done no studying/reviewing whatsoever. Oh well :D

AP PoliSci! oh snap! that was some good times.

yeah, there’s upperclassmen Exploration floors. i’m in one for senior year because i wanted to live around Union Square, lol. i’m in “dancing in the streets: a history of NYC dance”. (roommate: “i love dancing!” me: “it’s not going to be like america’s best dance crew, i hope you know that.” roommate: “dammit!”) a lot of sophomores do them.

did you already put your application in for Goddard? you have to apply for Goddard Hall- check your housing packet.

i don’t know anyone in freshmen Explorations, sorry.

i’m one of the odd ones in my program who’s thinking of going to a graduate program. MCC places a lot of people in advertising, magazines, marketing and public relations.
we do a lot of cultural analysis; what does this say about our culture? what does this or that say about what we hold important? why do people watch The Hills? why are video games important? what’s a consumer culture and why should we care? does news media skew our way of looking at the world? does sex really sell?

i’ve taken. . .
advertising and society: a history of consumer culture
the culture industry: how does the media industry work?
history of communication: what is communication? is it writing, seeing, hearing, buying things?
intro to media studies: what is media?
intro to media criticism: how to analyze a piece of media.
intro to human communication: how do we talk to each other? what’s non-verbal communication?
global communication: globalization and the media
video games: culture and industry: why are video games important? what do they tell us about the world?
war as media: how was 9/11 portrayed in the media?

i’m going abroad to Paris this summer to take Media and Religion: Technologies of the Sacred; how has religion impacted media? how has media impacted religion? it’s a graduate course.

i LOVE my major and you can definitely minor in studio art and take photography classes. i’m taking digital photography I in the fall, which goes towards completing my major. with a background in media and a minor or double major in studio art, you could definitely go into photojournalism.

most people in our department end up working in the aforementioned fields. one of my classmates already has a job at Vogue waiting for her when she graduates in a few weeks. she’s one of the lucky ones.

and me? i might become a professor and educate the next generation of media scholars about world of warcraft and pokemon. :-D

i like to call Steinhardt the “one of these things is not like the other” school. if you look at the majors offered, it’s easy to see why. hahahaha.

wowie your major sounds like a ton of fun stuff! It’s really applicable to daily life and I like that. Do you think it’s possible to major in neural science and double minor in TWO steinhardt minors? lol I sure hope so… I’m thinking minor in mcc and fine arts.

So we all have to apply for Goddard Hall and then if we choose, we can apply to an explorations program?

Yeah, I’m thinking maybe Goddard Hall will be the perfect first year living experience because it’s the majority of the people and it’s close to washington square and the little “campus” that we kinda sorta have. I can probably do explorations another year. A couple days ago, I was thinking “four years at nyu is not enough to do all that i want!” LOL

Thanks for your help, missamericanpie!
