Transfer to top Ivies... HYPSM, etc

I'm a sohpomore and planning to transfer. I go to a college that has pretty good refutation (it ranks around no.20 in US News). Is there any chance of being accepted to one of top national colleges (Havard, Yale, Stanfrod or Northwestern, Columbia..) or top liberal arts colleges (Amherst, Swathmore, Williams, etc.)? FYI, my GPA isn't that good (I totally screwed up the first semester..but was able to get all As later, so right now it's about 3.3). And I'm an international applicant.

any chance?

maybe northwestern, no chance at the others

no chance.

A 3.3 is not a strong enough GPA to justify that you should be at a better school than the one you are at.

in at princeton

thanks for the answers. frankly, i don't need to transfer to one of those top schools but i was a bit tempted. i wanted someone to clarify my situation and say 'give up'.

what about other colleges having similar level with mine?
i mean, gpa 3.3 is very bad and it won't let me tranfer to any of other colleges? curious.

one more.. what about gpa 3.5? i think i can get it at the end of soph. year.. is it still not good enough? even for schools not that hard?

Most schools of that caliber take a very small amount of transfer kids

Most of them have 3.7's +

figure your odds

yn1106: you seem very determined which is admirable, but even with a 3.6 GPA, I highly doubt you will get into an ivy as a transfer; 3.7+ minimum unless you have some stellar hook+perfect SAT score. And you might want to take out the P in HYP -- Princeton doesn't take transfers.

Save yourself the effort, money, and likely resulting sorrow. I'm not sure about the liberal art ones but I assume the same outcome given your gpa.

just applied to 3~4 schools that you really want wait for the decision...

Man it is so so so hard for you. People have graciously called 3.7 the threshold but even with 3.7, you can only set a finger in.

HY and other top 20 transfers are stellar people that have either been ED'd or stayed home for some stupid reason when they could have made it to Harvard/Yale.

These people maintain stellar HSs, extraterrestrial college records. They are non-human yn1016. You may want where you are because probably that's the place you are safest.

Furthermore, Williams doesn't let transfer as far as I know. Swarthmore too is quite difficult. Even Amherst, which is relatively easy is hard with a 3.3. Sorry pal...

Swarthmore easiest, then Amherst, then Wms which takes less than ten of the over 100 who apply. If you're at a good school stick w/ it: study abroad, study at an exchg school domestically, or take some time off and come back refreshed.

Charlie's World, Swarthmore and Amherst are only relatively easy if you are asking me. Otherwise, they are still quite impossible in any sensible scale. =)

Even the "lower" ivies wouldn't take a 3.3 without a really awesome hook. So the real question is what is your hook?

Princeton doesn't even accept transfers. Stanford, Harvard, Yale, MIT, have a transfer admission % of 2-3%.

Good Luck, sorry.

thanks anyway, for every comments, and now i know where to apply. and i know that princeton don't accept any transfers. hypsm on the title was my mistake.

You're not satisfied with your school? Top 20 is GREAT! You can attempt to bring your GPA up, and try to transfer next year (if you are currently a freshman). If not, then you'll be outta there soon enough and don't sweat it!

3.3 won't get you in. Even for georgetown, the average GPA for transfer students last year was 3.72, so it's a long shot. If you can push it up to 3.5, and have stellar recommendations and SAT scores, you might stand a chance. Since you are an international applicant, it would also help if you were not asking for financial aid.

What courses did you take? If you were placed into higher level courses and got bad grades before..its better than getting bad grades on easy ones.. your major would also be an important consideration. Make your essays strong. Create a good story. I know that numbers are important. If you have a 3.5 and screwed one semester then, you should have a valid reason for it. Explain it all. Its not like everyone with a 4 gpa is through at Ivies. There are so many other factors!
You have to be dedicated and determined. Make you intentions clear. Apply for some Internships if you can. Improve your resume as much as you can.You have an advantage since you are an international student and colleges look for diversity in their student population.
The core of it : You should pull up your gpa try getting 4s..may be take 5 classes if you can manage it. And, give it a shot. It doesn't hurt :)
Goodluck

really, thanks! i think i can pull up my gpa by 3.5 or 3.6 at the end of the sophomore year. and i'm going to apply to some LACs (not like williams, amherst, etc.) but still i don't think i have any chance b/c i'm also asking for financial aid as well....
