Transfer to UCLA Communications

I’m currently a freshman at a 4-year who is transferring to a CC next year and HOPEFULLY to UCLA the following year. I know UCLA communications is nearly impossible to get into, and I want to do everything possible to help my chances.

My current gpa is 3.93. I plan on being TAP certified and completing IGETC and all the prereqs except 1 (it’s not offered at my CC). For those that successfully transferred into the program, what were your stats and do you have any tips??? Also for those who were rejected, what were your stats? Thank you!

It’s tough but ppl get in. UCLA comm dept does not accept TAP, FYI, so if that is the major you want don’t bother with TAP. I got into UCLA comm without TAP, although I chose Berkeley.

I’m mostly just doing TAP for the alt major, but does it actually say anywhere on the ucla page that TAP doesn’t work for comm? I’ve heard that but haven’t found definitive proof. Also what were your stats?

I was 4.0.

I might be wrong about TAP and Comm Studies. I may have been mixing it up with it not being allowed to be the alternate.

I did some digging and I agree it seems that you can choose any major in L&S. I was sure Comm was excluded when I applied and did finally find this link, which says it is/was excluded. So I am wondering if it was the case a couple years back and they changed the policy.

Thank you! I’ll definitely call UCLA to confirm. Either way, it’s super impressive that you got into the comm program without TAP. Did you have amazing ECs and essays?

I had a couple of internships that were marketing-related. I think your GPA is fine. Try and do some social media marketing for free for anyone - a small store or coffeehouse near you, for example. A couple of those kinds of things for a few months each (internship) will do a lot to get you in.

@Ohm888 I’m nervously waiting to hear back from UCLA, I applied as a transfer for their communications program, I know its extremely competitive and difficult to get in to. I work in social media for a WPP/JWT ad agency (1 year+/ 40 hours a week) this job requires a BA/BS to even be considered but I was promoted within 6 months because of my stellar work. Do you think having a professional job working in social media will help my chances? I wrote about this in my personal statement and connected my interest working with social media/advertising with what I want to do with a communications degree.

@brnnbrnn that’s an excellent EC but you didn’t say what your GPA is.

Thats the caveat, I enrolled in CC in Florida 2010-2013 and did mediocre 2.7 GPA (death in the family, picked up second job and explained my situation in an EC) fast-forward to 2016 I enrolled in a CCC and most of my credits rolled over, I took a total of 9 classes including all the ASSIST classes and received straight A’s and 1 B in Stats, my CCC GPA is 3.86

@Ohm888

I spoke with my counselor and they will honor TAP with communications as your first choice (in other words, they’ll still give your app priority review); however, it just cannot be listed as your alternate major.

I know that this conversation was earlier in the thread; however, I didn’t see a definitive answer so I thought it might be helpful for some. Best of luck!

How hard to get into communication major? I will be a freshman in Fall.

@ccstudent1517 I got a different answer from my honors counselors. They said TAP doesn’t work for Comm, but it can work for your alt major. I did TAP and applied to Communications for Fall. I chose Linguistics as my alt.

@jae2017 I will call UCLA and get more information about this as there are many conflicting reports. I am under the impression that TAP works for any major in the college of letters and sciences. I cannot find any where on the UCLA TAP website that says otherwise. I know for a fact that you cannot choose communication studies as an alt. major but I am still under the belief that TAP works for communications.

Comm didn’t used to be in TAP but I believe it is now. Whether it is or isnt they will assess it first, then roll you to alt if necessary.

@jae2017 Your counselor is incorrect. I just spoke on the phone with someone in the admissions department. If you have applied for an impacted major such as Communication studies, you WILL get priority review if you qualify for TAP.

I hope this clarifies the situation. Here is the number for UCLA general inquiries and advisement if you have any more questions: (310) 825-3101.

@ccstudent1517 That’s interesting. Thanks for trying to figure that out. When I went in to complete my TAP papers (for certification), they almost didn’t process mine because they said TAP doesn’t work for Communications. Then they said because I have Linguistics as my alt, they’ll process it since it can help with that.

Good luck to all of us!

@jae2017 Yikes! I’m glad that they did process it though. You should still be getting priority review. Decisions are a few weeks away. Best of luck to you as well! Let us know what happens

@ccstudent1517 awesome! thanks for the info. I don’t know why but I got conflicting information from students and counselors, haha. Glad this was cleared up.
