Transfer to UCLA: Most Important to the Least Important

To summarize the "priority" importance, here is the list of factors (from the most important to the least important):

1.) TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) - According to many people here, if you are in TAP, you are basically 90% in at UCLA regardless of your major (impacted or not) as long as your GPA is above 3.2

2.) GPA - Applies only to people who are not in TAP. Maintain at least 3.5 GPA for non-impacted major and 3.8 for the more impacted major.

3.) Essay - Applies only to the borderline candidates. This is where you get to "plea" and "brag" about your ECs and/or hard circumstances that prevented you from achieving your academic perfection, and the essay that truly stands out gets the bread.

4.) Employment - Employment matters much more than the school clubs/organizations. School clubs may show your leadership ability, but employment shows something more unique that very few people possess: family responsibility.

5.) ECs/Recommendations DO NOT MATTER.

Whether you agree with this or not, this is as much impression I got through series of discussion and argument regarding "What's the most important factor for Transfer Admission". Although I still have some doubt about #1, I can generally agree with the rest.

correct me if I'm wrong.

CORRECTION:

3: nvm about the "bragging about EC" part. It won't do you any good. The main purpose of essay is to describe certain family/personal hardships you had to endure and to explain the reasons for why couldn't do better with the academics. :)

you're wrong.

very well.
what would you correct?

i think you got the order wrong also...TAP is def not UCLA's highest priority when looking at an applicant.

here's my list:
1. GPA

IGETC/CCC...most UC's won't consider you if you don't complete the IGETC; plus CCC students do get a big preference over non CCC students, UC to UC, and other 4 year school transfers.

Major prereq completion/competitiveness of major...some UC's wont look at you if you don't complete the necessary prereqs..also the acceptance rate for business/engineering students are probably a lot different than the celtic studies major at the same school.

Essay...if you keep on the subject and write somewhat decently, you're doing pretty well.

E.C.s/Employment..they factor in about the same i think.

TAP...only for people who are borderline.

oh I'm sorry i didnt mention. This was for the ccc transfer students only.
transfer from 4 year institute has completely different list. they don't even have TAP.

Whether or not you attend SMC...

Whether the classes you take to complete IGETC are difficult or not. Adcoms will verify this information by checking RateMyProfs and analyzing the smileys adjacent to the names of your teachers.

Whether or not you have used online or distance courses to fulfill IGETC. If you have, they will automatically reject you.

Lmao!!!!!!!

this thread is a joke...for transfers the only two thing that matter are:

GPA, Prerequisite Completion

Citan, you forgot TAP

ok, so I totally forgot about the Prereq completion...
Here's my edited list:

1.) TAP (Transfer Alliance Program) - According to many people here, if you are in TAP, you are basically 90% in at UCLA regardless of your major (impacted or not) as long as your GPA is above 3.2

2.) Prereq completion - One thing that may affect your admission even if you are in TAP is only when you don't have all of your major's required courses completed.

3.) GPA - Applies only to people who are not in TAP. Maintain at least 3.5 GPA for non-impacted major and 3.8 for the more impacted major.

4.) Essay - Applies only to the borderline candidates. The main purpose of essay is to describe certain family/personal hardships you had to endure and to explain the reasons for why couldn't do better with the academics.

5.) Employment - Employment matters much more than the school clubs/organizations. School clubs may show your leadership ability, but employment shows something more unique that very few people possess: family responsibility.

6.) ECs/Recommendations DO NOT MATTER.

"6.) ECs/Recommendations DO NOT MATTER."

Of course recommendations do not matter, since they do not accept them. ECs however, can be a tipping factor for otherwise similarly qualified applicants; so I wouldn't discount them...

1) GPA
2) IGETC (if the major requires it)
3) Pre-Reqs
4) TAP
4) Essays (make-or-braker for borderline students)
5) ECs/Employment (I think they count the same)

Maybe TAP should be higher? Not sure, but my list is predicated on the level of preparedness the student has by the time of transfer.

i'm pretty sure the pre-req courses outweight the igetc.

no I didn't forget TAP...that really doesn't matter that much, not to mention the fact that HSSEAS doesn't accept them. What matters for UCLA is GPA and class completion. Things are ECs, essay are of secondary importance.

TAP comes last, gpa comes first

ok now im just confused.
regarding the importance of TAP, people are either on one side or the other, there is no middle ground.

Some people say it's the most important factor for cc transfers (you are almost guaranteed in if you are in TAP), while others say it's only useful for borderline candidates and is the least important factor.

What's the truth?

Many transfers for the Fall '06 Quarter / Semester did not have TAP under their belt. Just an FYI.

Many of my friends admitted to UCLA had low gpas (under 3.2) as well as no TAP.

I think the whole process is more holistic than we would like to give credit.

EDIT: In impacted majors nonetheless.

well that could mean several thinks.

It could mean that very few people actually participated in TAP, and maybe all of them got in. so for example, if 2000 applied for UCLA, only 200 might have participated for TAP and all of them got in, but there were still 800 spots left, so those qualified w/o TAP might have filled those 800 up.

or it could mean that TAP actually don't matter much.

Cardinal, you said your friends with 3.2's with no TAP got in... care to say which majors?
