I’m currently in a CCC. My first year was spent doing pre-reqs and general ed classes, and right now I’m starting my second year. For all intents and purposes, however, this year will cover the first year of my physics transfer major requirements (Calc I, II, Mechanics, Chemistry sequence). So even though I will have more than 60 units by the end of my second year here in CCC, I will only cover about a year of freshman physics/math. My original plan was always to stay the third year in CCC to complete ALL of my major requirements before transferring. (E&M, Calc III, linear algebra, differential equations, optics).
Is it possible to apply for transfer now, for admittance in Fall 2016, rather than complete my 3rd year and wait til Fall 2017?
The reason I ask is because I heard that by Fall 2017, it will be mandatory to have completed all of the major requirements when transferring to a UC. But I imagine this implies that this isn’t mandatory for transfer before then, such as Fall 2016.
Even though I will have the units to apply for transfer, generally speaking I would have to spend 3 years in UCSB to complete the sophomore level classes that I would skip in CCC (if I choose to transfer in Fall 2016).
Would this be possible to do? Would they allow someone to transfer, only to be admitted as a sophomore? Instead of transferring in 2017 as a Junior?
I read that the sophomore year in CCS Physics is really invaluable. I just want to know if it’s possible to transfer like that. Would I even have a solid shot at getting accepted? Would I be able to apply again the next year if I don’t get accepted? I’ve already applied to UCs when I was in high school for freshman admittance but I was rejected.
What does it say on your assist page right now? Does it say ‘required’?
It says “Transfer students are strongly advised to complete as many major preparatory courses as
possible prior to enrolling at UCSB. Although completion of all major
preparatory courses is not an admissions requirement, completion, or near
completion, of these courses will help students move more efficiently toward
graduation after transfer.”
Are you certain that you want to go to UCSB?
I’d take a third year at CC. It’ll save you money, and could allow you take a more relaxed schedule these two years.
I agree with @goldencub. Speaking from a financial aid standpoint, you would transfer in with junior standing (greater than 59 units earned) regardless of the length of time spent at the CCC. Due to this, most financial aid (Blue and Gold for example) will be limited to two years which means any additional time you have to spend at the UC will have minimal to no aid. This is significantly more expensive relative to staying the extra year at the CCC…
To answer your question though, you can apply any year you are eligible to meet the 60 unit requirement, but realistically it will be a deferment as UCSB is very strict on prerequisites. Additionally your timeline to meet the major preps fit better taking the extra year:
Fall 2015 - Calc I, Chem I
Spring 2016 - Calc II, Physics I, Chem II
Fall 2016 - Physics II, Linear Algebra
Spring 2016 - Physics III, Diff EQs, Multi-variable Calc (?)
Considering that you already have most, if not all, your GEs met, it’s makes for a schedule that avoids overloaded semesters and gives you the best chances of transferring to UCSB or higher.
Hmm, I see. I hadn’t thought about it from the financial aid standpoint, I always planned on just getting straight As and hopefully getting some scholarships, but I won’t be as competitive if I don’t have the full major requisites, will I?
What if I apply through TAG? Would I still have to defer or would I be able to take those resulting major requirements at UCSB?
But yeah, money does come first in this case…
I just feel like I may be starting to spread thin in terms of tolerance for being at a CCC. It’s great but I just really want to move on and start living my life (and move out from my parent’s house). Anyway I can keep myself motivated during that third CCC year?
