Transfer to UCSC/other UCs - Physics classes

Hi,

My daughter will be applying to several UCs next fall (CCC transfer). Her major is Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. UCSC requires Physics 190 and 210 or 200. However, the other UCs she wants to apply to require Physics 130/131. Only Irvine will also accept Physics 190/200. She wants to apply to UCI, UCD, UCSB, UCSC.

I know she should talk to a counselor but quite frankly her CC transfer counselors have been unreliable at best.

She’s leaning toward UCSC for their EEB program but wants to keep her options open. Who should she contact at UCSC if she wants to see if she can take Physics 130/131 courses accepted at all the other UCs and see if UCSC would accept them?

Does her CC Physics courses articulate to both Physics series 190/200 and 130/131? What are differences in the series? One for Bio majors and one for Engineering majors?

She should contact the specific major department at UCSC.

For UCSC, she needs 2 CC courses that articulate with PHYS 6A/L, plus 6B or 6C) at UCSC.

UCI does not have a Physics course requirement for transfers.

So her CC courses of Physics 190/200/210 only articulate to UCI’s Physics 3A/3B/3C?

According to Assist, the Physics courses of 190/200/210 only articulate to UCI and UCSC.

She wants to apply to Davis and Santa Barbara as well but they require Physics 130/131.

The difference is that Physics 190/200/210 include Mechanics of Heat, Wave Motion, and Electricity and Magnetism. Physics 130/131 are Fundamentals of Physics.

Thank you for your quick response!

I would contact the Major departments at all the target UC’s to see if she can substitute the Physics courses required for UCD and UCSB and use them for UCI and UCSC or visa versa.

To me the Physics 190/200/210 series is more comprehensive than the 130/131 series. I would think that the 190 series should satisfy all schools.

Best of luck and please update if and when you get an answer.

I remember talking to a UCR counselor because I was missing a course that I didn’t have space in my EdPlan to take and idk if this would pertain to you but I hope this helps!
Basically they pulled up a document with a list of courses that they can substitute it with so I can still be considered for admission using the courses that I’ve already taken.

I agree with @Gumbymom about taking the 190 series to satisfy all the requirements but I’d still like to know if you get an answer!
