Transfer to UCSD from UCI... Questions

Ok, so i'm a 2nd year at UCI currently. I applied to UCSD as a checkbox school for transfer (I really wanted to transfer to CAL, however, I figured why not apply to the other uc's again, as it's just another check box, and if i went through all that other trouble, may as well have more options). I got admitted into Thurgood Marshall college.

The questions i have are these. At UCI, i'm an Engineering Student, and in good standing. However, UCSD admitted me as an undeclared, There was mention that I didn't meet the course requirements for Engineering school. My question is this. how difficult is it to get admitted into the Engineering school as an Undeclared? Btw, the engineering focus is Mechanical (havn't ruled out Aerospace)

Also, what is the social life like compared to UCI. UCI is mostly a clubbing scene, and a commuter school, thus dead on the weekeneds. I've read similar things about UCSD.

How hard is it to find housing as a transfer?

Basically, do I say yes or no and why? I have till June 1st, and am kinda flipping out over it.

If you can, try to finish up requriements for UCSD Engineering over the summer. Transferring to one of the engineering majors should be easy as they're not impacted (sans BioE and EE).

SD isn't as much as a commuter school as UCI, but supposedly, it is almost as dead as Irvine on weekends. The good thing about UCSD is that the shuttles take you anywhere you need to go; and the convenient buses take you all around downtown San Diego. Or, if you have one, a car would make everything you'd want to do within 15 minutes away.

Finding a house as a transfer would most likely mean that you're going to have to live off-campus. Check out these sites for oppurtunities:

If you got into Cal, I would go there for sure, as they are one of the most accredited schools for engineering in the nation. If not, it's up to you. The Jacobs School of Engineering in UCSD is up to par with the Samuelli School of Engineering in UCLA, giving you more job oppurtunities in Southern California after Undergrad. Irvine is great, too, for engineering, but I don't believe it can be held in the same respect as the top-tier schools in the UCs.

I got the No from cal. So it's essentially UCI or UCSD.

I have a car, so i'll be having it in SD as well.

I really feel like the only thing from making me full on say yes to UCSD is the gaurentee that I'll be able to transfer into the school of engineering, as well as finding housing. If ME isn't impossible ot transfer into, i may just have to say yes to the offer.

lbraasch - Before you make a commitment, make sure you contact the UCSD Jacobs Engineering school and ask them about the ability to transfer into it. Admissions to the Jacobs School is different than admissions to UCSD in general, has higher GPA and course requirements for admission than UCSD in general, and transferring in can be difficult. UCSD has a two-tier admission cycle for the Jacobs school - first you'd be admitted UCSD then the application is sent the Jacobs engineering school for admission there. A number of people make it into UCSD but not the Jacobs engineering school. This is the way it works for freshman admits - I'm not certain of the details for transfer admits into engineering.

You want to be certain you can get into the major you want before you burn your bridges at UCI. The transfer would be pointless if you can't have your desired major.

I'm pretty positive i wouldn't be burning the bridges w/ uci btw. You can withdrawl, attend another school, and always just reapply, which I've already done once. You just reapply into the school. Last time i did it, it was a semester at JC and then back to UCI. I'm pretty sure it works the same way between UC's, but still, it's a tough choice.

My main priority right now is to make sure i'll be able to get into the engineering school at UCSD, but otherwise, i think i'm going to make the switch.

If you specified engineering on your UCSD application then it seems that you should get a letter from the Jacobs school indicating whether you were accepted or not. This letter can lag the normal UCSD admission letter by a week or so. If it's been longer than that for you, contact them. They're capable of making mistakes.

That's good that the bridge doesn't get burnt.

see, the thing is, i just got my regular undergrad acceptance yesterday. I only have till June 1st to accept or decline. Doesn't really leave me much time to sit around and wait. Come monday, i'm going to drive down to UCSD and just try and talk to the people in person, and get a feel for the campus.

That's a good idea to see them in person and check out the campus and area. If you just received your UCSD letter yesterday though, the engineering school might not have had a chance to review the app yet. You might want to delay your trip for a few days and maybe call first since you have until next week to decide anyway.

If you don't know the area and if you're thinking of living off-campus, head over to the UTC mall area and check out all of the apartments and condos (many for rent) in that area. Check around Nobel and Regents and Genesee. These areas are all served by the free campus shuttle. Go to La Jolla Shores beach or Black's beach to see what a close-by beach is like.

It might rain Monday.
