Transfer to UMD chance

I am looking to transfer to UMD from an out of state community college. I once lived in Maryland where I got a 1.8 GPA due to some personal issues. I took off a year and relocated down to Florida. Now I have an institutional GPA of 3.86 and a cumulative of 3.13. I did receive a ‘D’ in Stats class in Maryland, however it was not showing up into my GPA with transfer credits making my GPA in Maryland a 2.1, which I am figuring that ‘D’ will come back around sometime. Pending fall semester with a 4.0 I will have a Cum GPA of 3.3. I am considering to apply for early decision for Spring 2016 to see if I happen to get in and then defer for Fall 2016 so I know prior if I have gotten in. I for sure am moving back to Maryland. I am not limiting myself to UMD, but I would prefer to get into Smith Business School. If I hold off and apply for early decision for Fall 2016, I will be hopefully sitting on a 3.3 GPA and would my Associates by the end of Spring 2016 semester. But I would also have a 3.5 GPA by the time I receive my associates. If anyone could give me some input.

Hi there. My personal advice would be to address your personal issues in your essay because that could really help your chances if they understand what happened. The other thing is i am not sure that you can defer your admission? If you apply for the Spring and are accepted you are given the options of accepting or rejecting the offer so I would be sure to make sure that is even a possibility before you apply. Have you completed the fundamental studies math and english courses? Those supposedly booth your chances.

I did read somewhere on the UMD site that defer is possible under certain circumstances. My english courses are done. With my math I will have to contact the school to see if I will need additional math. I have only completed up the Math 113 which is comparable to PreCalculus here. However I have to take a Calculus for Business and Social course which I am not finding anywhere that is satisfiable to any courses at UMD.
