I'm currently a freshman at Virginia Tech. I'm changing majors, so i'm transferring to an in-state school to save money (I live in North Carolina). If going to UNC, I'd hope to double major in English and Journalism. If NCSU, I'd major in English and minor in Journalism (seeing as they don't offer journalism as a major). NC State also seems to have more opportunities and more focused concentrations/routes within the English major. I understand that UNC is a better school, (especially since it is a liberal arts school specifically known for its journalism and creative writing programs) but that may not be worth it. All of my credits will transfer over to NC State, and more of my major classes for state i can take at my community college. Less than half of my first year credits will transfer to UNC and there are less that I will be able to take at community college to help catch up.
I really like both of the campus's and the atmospheres, but I don't know which would be the better choice. UNC will definitely require a year or more extra than NC State. (side information that I think is important- i love art and music, galleries and shows, anything of the sort. I will definitely be getting involved in a campus ministry) any insight?

UNC’s school newspaper, the Daily Tarheel, is frequently ranked one of the best in the nation. Same for its journalism school. If that’s something you’re really interested in, UNC’s probably the way to go.

However, you need to evaluate your financial situation. Can you avoid another year or semester at UNC versus State? What sacrifices will you have to make to finance that extra time? It might not be worth it to you or your family.

Best of luck with your decision.

It’s not so much about the financial burden. I’m saving $60,000 by transferring to an in-state school, so that would be the same as three extra years at either UNC or NCSU. With either school I will be saving money since I don’t imagine my degree taking three extra years. I guess it’s more of, is it worth my time (that extra semester, year, etc.) to get a degree from UNC instead of state.

I think that it’s worth one more year to get a degree from UNC rather than State, especially because UNC is so strong in Journalism. Think of it this way: You will use your degree to get career opportunities for the rest of your life. It’s worth one more year now to get the best one you can.

But, keep in mind that you are on the UNC boards. We’re probably a little biased here. :)

I keep seeing everywhere that UNC pushes students to leave/graduate after eight semesters, and if they don’t they are kind of set aside. Wanting to double major, and being a transfer, I think it’d be impossible for me to graduate on time. Will this be a problem???

You have to petition to stay more than 8 semesters, but they are generally going to let you. Especially in your circumstances, that wouldn’t be a problem.

it says if you’ve been there for over eight semesters you can only graduate with a single degree and no minor (even if eligible for one)?
