I am currently a freshman at the University of Florida. Yes, it’s early, and I am still giving it time but want to have information should I decide to apply for transfer.
What would be the best way to go about this to maximize my odds for admission?
Why specifically UNC? What’s wrong with UF so far?
I have no family in Florida which isn’t necessarily an issue, however I do not enjoy dealing with hurricane season, also the party culture here is a little bit too present for me. Many experiences to go through still, my mind could easily change, I’d just like to have the option.
I feel as if the academic caliber and presence is a bit higher on UNC’s campus. I also like the campus itself and demographics of the area better than Gainesville.
A disclaimer: the party culture will follow you wherever you go. UNC has a very prevalent party culture as well. UNC I suppose has better resources and opportunities in general, but if by “academic caliber and presence” you mean that UNC’s rank is about 20 spots up from UF, then yes, I suppose there is a “higher academic caliber and presence”.
Did you apply to UNC during high school?
Yes I did. I’m out of state so I think that REALLY hurt me. Deferred then rejected.
It’s “easier” to get in as a transfer than as a freshman. Keep your GPA high and pay close attention to the essays. Demonstrate why UNC is a good fit for you.
It is true that the party culture will follow you to any school, but at UNC there are enough people who don’t party and there is always something else to do. Good luck!
Just to roughly gauge where you stand:
What’s your HS GPA?
SAT/ACT?
Here’s the most recently published class profile. Scroll down, and you’ll see the dead average college GPA+SAT/ACT of admitted transfer students, broken down by their admitted year (freshman, etc…)
My HS GPA: 3.9/4.0
ACT: 28
Do well during your first year and I think you’ll be in a great position. Just keep in mind that financial aid for out of state transfer students is much worse than what you’re most likely getting at your current institution.
UNC meets full financial need for all students, including those from OOS. UF does not meet full need.
I would call UNC and ask if they also meet full need for transfer students.
… Except remember, in state Florida students have Florida Bright Futures (which pays full tuition at any and every public Florida institution for those eligible, and @nduclaunc definitely is eligible).
I had spoken to UNC during the last admissions cycle, and they had told me that although they are need-blind, they do not necessarily meet full need for transfer students.
I don’t know if they’ve changed this, but their website concerning financial aid for transfers does not explicitly state whether they meet full-need for transfer students.
The OP said he has no family in Fla… I assume he/she is OOS?
Okay. Let’s assume he/she is OOS. While he/she may have not received any in-state benefits from FL, he/she still has scholarships and some aid that is exclusive towards freshman applicants.
All I’m stating is that @nduclaunc will most likely have to pay more for UNC. Merit aid is non-existent for transfer students, and schools that do not meet full-need for transfer students prioritize freshman applicants for need-based aid.
How do you know that the OP has scholarships to UF?
UNC is more expensive than UF if there is no merit or FA. That may or may not be an issue- we don’t know.
…sorry, she COULD have scholarships.
Yes this is true… there may be scholarships… right now we have no info about finances.
Thank you both so much for the help within this thread.
I am female, and as you assumed, I am out of state. I am a Texas resident who is going to the university of Florida currently under no need based or merit aid distributed by the university.
I do however have 5-6 private scholarships awarded by my community that I am using right now, however these awards only apply for my freshman year anyways, and considering if I was accepted to UNC I would be a Fall 2018 student, essentially that would not be an issue.
Although I believe my parents would be willing, how much more is tuition at UNC?
At Florida I am in a sorority and pay an additional $4000-5000 for dues here anyways.
@TransferStalker additionally, I have met with an advisor at the admissions office when I visited recently, and have kept in touch and was just curious…
He said the average GPA for transfer there is a 3.7. I assume there is a large transfer presence from community colleges, and though I’m working very hard to get a 3.7+, would it be safe to assume a 3.5/3.6 at UF could look the same to an admissions counselor judging a 3.7/3.8 community college GPA?
Any additional tips for application for transfer would be very helpful.
