Transfer to Upper-Tier

All right so at the moment I am attending the University of Arizona, but I really cannot stand it. The academics, the people, the area, all are just not a good fit for me. I would love to transfer to a school with more prestige than U of A. However, my parents are no longer in any sort of position to pay the $50,000 yearly tuition of just about every top tier school.
The current plan I have in mind is to transfer to a California community college, such as Santa Barbera CC, spend a year there inevitable getting good grades and establishing California residency, and then transfer over to UCLA or UC Berkeley.
Does anyone know if this is a feasible plan?
Also, any recommendations of other possible ways of getting into somewhere like NYU or Georgetown that are along the same lines as the one I detailed above?
My Gpa after my freshman year at U of A will be between 3.75 and 3.83.

Thanks.

You should take this question to the Transfer Forum. Click on “Discussion Home” on the left-hand side of this screen, and scroll down to find it. Start by reading through the thread “Transfer Admissions 101” at the top of that forum. Your GPA is decent, you may be able to find a place that you will be happier at.

And no, it is almost impossible for you to establish California residence while studying. You would need to move there, get a job, and become self-supporting for a year before starting classes.
