Transfer to USC

Hey guys, so Im going to University of Alabama in the fall, but it was a fall back for me, so I'd like to transfer to either Miami U or USC. I was going to Rush in Alabama, but I had a few questions first.

Lets say I pledge Kappa Kappa Gamma at Alabama and I get a bid and become a sister. Does that mean if I transfer to USC that I will automatically be in the sorority and I can join them as their sister? If not is there any type of special initiation I have to go through or something? Same thing goes for if I pledge Delta Gamma and go to Miami.

As I go to Alabama, I will be looking at the sororities that are offered at USC and Miami. Is it smarter for me to just not Rush there are all and wait until I get to whichever College I end up getting into as a transfer?

If I proceed with question 2, is USC really pickey about sophomore pledges? I really love Kappa Kappa Gamma there as I have visited, loved the girls, and love their philanthropy. I know Alabama doesn't really like sophomore pledges and it can sometimes be harder to get in if youre older. Is it the same at USC or Miami? Because if so then maybe it would be better to rush Kappa at Alabama, and If I get it then I can use it at USC or if not, then ill just have to try sophomore year. -- if you could also answer this question for Miami too please! :)

Try also asking your questions on the individual college UA, USC & MiamiU forums.

@sm119sm When you join a sorority at any school, you become part of their national organization. This means that if you were to transfer from Alabama to USC or anywhere else, if you had already been initiated as a Kappa then you would be able to become part of the USC (or another school’s) Kappa chapter. However, the women of whichever chapter you are trying to join, must agree to let you into their chapter before you are allowed to take place in any of their rituals or sacred chapter events. If you are denied, then I believe you become an alumni of your Sorority (not 100% on that). If you are accepted, then you get to be involved in their house. Its also subjective to the Sorority. This is how my Sorority does it, but I am not a Kappa so I don’t know their protocol for these things.

If you already know that you want to transfer, I would suggest waiting to go through recruitment until you are settled at the school that you want to be at. A Kappa chapter on one campus may be different than on another campus and if you become initiated before you transfer, your only options for Greek Life would be to join the new school’s chapter, or surrender your membership completely. For example, I go to a school in Washington and am in a Sorority there, but I visited the same Sorority at USC and the “personality” was very different than that of my chapter.

Also, from someone who is in the Greek System, try, to keep an open mind. Chapter houses are more than their letters and philanthropies; there is a sense of comfort that you find in your sisters. If you go through recruitment, and you are telling yourself that you are only going to be a part of one specific house, you may miss out on finding a place that you feel truly comfortable and part of. Also, recruitment at USC and many other west coast schools is different than some southern places and what you see in movies. You visit every chapter house and slowly there is a mutual elimination until you end up with a house that you chose and that also chose you.

Best of luck with whatever you decide!
