Hi, Im interested in transferring to UVa from Tidewater Community College. Going to be blunt, didn't do great in high school (also didn't flunk out, but I wouldn't have been able to get in to very many colleges with my end result), however I did graduate with an "Advanced Studies" Diploma, received 4's on AP Biology, US History, and Psychology, and also only got a 1640 on my SAT (willing to retake, cause I probably need to). I plan on going to TCC for a Fall and Spring semester and possibly summer if needed. I initially don't want to go the "Acquire an Associates Degree and get guaranteed transfer" route (mainly because I don't want to wait two+ years to get in). I want go major in Biology and my main motivation to go to UVa is because I believe it to be one of the best colleges in the country, because I absolutely need the aid (via AccessUVa, cause im poor as fudge and my parents said they won't pay) and its proximity to JMU. I can provide more info. What are my chances? Any advice? Thanks.

Just one year at community college? I don’t think the guaranteed admissions policy applies to that (not sure, you should check in with Tidewater/UVA to ensure a correct answer). Keeping that in mind along with your HS grades as they’ll probably be somewhat relevant, in my personal opinion, UVA might be too much of a reach for you at this specific point in time.

Your SAT score is a bit low since the average at UVA is around 2000. I would definitely suggest getting the associates degree first as it would be guaranteed if you did well enough.

My advice is to talk to your guidance counselor and to U-Va admissions.

“The (U-Va) Committee on Admission strongly recommends that prospective transfer students complete either the Associate in Arts (AA), the Associate in Arts and Sciences (AA&S) or the Associate in Science (AS).”

Notice, by the way, the incorrect use of the word “either” in the U-Va quote above.
