Transfer to UVA from W&M

Hey all. I'm a freshman at William and Mary and am very interested in transferring to UVA after the end of my first year here. I've already sent in my app, but I just wanted to get opinions on my chances. Here's the situation: I got waitlisted at UVA out of highschool - I attended Thomas Jefferson HSST in Alexandria, VA. I wanted to go to UVA very badly, but I accepted W&M after I didn't get taken off the waitlist. While W&M is ok, I much prefer the atmosphere at UVA and UVA has a media studies program, my preferred major, which W&M does not have, and this was the stated reason for wanting to transfer on my app. I've been in contact with the Dean of transfer admissions and he's been fairly cryptic but helpful, as I'm sure he has to be. I just want to get some views on it.

I personally think the 4.0 at W&M should do pretty well for me, but I just get nervous when I see the admission numbers and all the people I personally know who are trying to transfer there as well.

Any thoughts/encouragement/discouragement welcome. Thanks!

why were u not accepted at uva at first place? ur sat is so good?

GPA at end of junior year was below 3.7, and I got caught in the TJ and Northern Virginia crush (a few hundred seniors accepted from my school last year, we send the most to UVA of any HS in the nation). I got waitlisted, basically because my GPA was on the bubble.

oh yea TJ... lol. i have a similar problem also. 50 kids are applying to uva from my school. its so competetive. so, thats my only disadvantage i think

You can check out the instate transfer stats for fall 2004.

http://www.virginia.edu/stats&facts/

I think that you have two things going for you: you were not rejected last year, and you have a 4.0 at W & M.

Good luck.

i dont get this... only 37 people get in afte waitlist? does that mean only 37 people didnt go to uva after being admitted? why dont they put as many people from waitlist and that many didnt go after beingaccepted? like, 2000 declined after being accpeted and offer 2000 people on waitlist to go?

you have to consider their yield. They expect a certain percent not to matriculate. Waitlisted students are only accepted if their yield is below what they anticipated and therefore usually quite small.

I also think that a lot of schools put people on the waitlist because they were really close to admission, but didn't quite make it. That was the individual can say that they were waitlisted--not rejected.

Which was my point to op. He must have been close to acceptance the first time he applied.

Keep those grades up, and you should have as good a chance as anyone. The 4.0 at W&M is impressive, given their notoriety for tough grading standards. This will not be lost on the adcom.

on the site it says approximately 2000 students are waitlisted.... they expect 1800 more to not graduate since they only accept 37?? anyways, i hear that after ur deferred, it means ur waitlisted... that means, i dont have a good chance of getting in? what is the percent of deferrees being accepted later?

Bump bump...anyone else have an opinion on me?

4.0 GPA first semester means you have a 100.00% chance of getting in as a transfer. Anything at or above 3.5 and you are looking great for transfer to UVa from W&M. Writing for the Flat Hat and everything, you're in. I'd buy the VIRGINIA sweatshirt today and stop worrying.

Hmm...hope so! How are you so sure?

slammer, all i can say is that there is no way you are going to be rejected... 4.0 at w&m is damn good as w&m is known to be the hardest college in va. plus that sat score and everything else should get you in. if i were you, i would just relax and stay away from this site. if they reject you, i dont know who they would accept either. also, i would say you could also aim as high as duke or jhu , upenn also judgingfrom your stats

Slammer, How were you WAITLISTED, it just doesnt make sense. 81% of TJ students that apply to UVA get in, and you are no in the bottom 19 percentile of TJ. I was accepted with lower stats than yours in every catagory and even ED. Are you SURE there isnt another part of your application that your not telling us??? (Suspensions, expultions, Fights, etc.)

Nope, nothing of that nature. I think that my GPA was just too low after junior year (3.61). Thanks for the input guys.
