Hi everyone!
I’m going to be a freshman at my local community college this upcoming week (just graduated high-school, c/o 2018), and I was wondering if it would be possible for me to do a lower-division transfer to UW as a Sophomore? I would have enough credits to qualify as a sophomore following this first year that I complete at community college, and I just wanted to see if I could maybe get myself in as a sophomore for the fall of 2019, rather than having to wait out two years at my community college.
Also if it matters, when I applied this last year (my senior year), I got accepted as a freshman (class of 2022); I just turned down the admission offer.
Thanks!
Yes, you can apply as a transfer after only 1 year at a CC. You count as a transfer student once you’ve completed any university coursework after the summer quarter following you graduating high school. Then it is your number of transferable credits that determine your class standing. 45-89 is a Sophomore.
It helps to have a good reason why you want to transfer early – for example, if you want to major in Asian studies and your community college does not offer Korean. You started with AP credits and are running out of classes to take in chemistry. Things like that.
The preference is to take students who have completed the transfer degrees.
I don’t think preference is given to students that complete a degree before transferring anymore. I was told by advisors this was not the case when I transferred last Spring. They said that they simply look at what courses you took and what grades you have. So while it may benefit you to have more credits, you don’t need to worry about any specific degree requirements at your CC beyond those requirements which align with what UW wants.
@uwcse2020 , slightly off topic question – my son has completed a summer class at BC and the grade is posted on BC unofficial transcript. How can he transfer that credit to UW? He tried the “Import Transcript” option in MyPlan, but it couldn’t find the BC course credit. Well, it’s just a week after the summer quarter ended, maybe it takes longer than that for the credit to show up?
@bogeyorpar It took until July for my daughter’s spring quarter classes to show up. There are a lot of transcripts to process each fall. If the class is a prerequisite, someone from the advising office can override registration into the next level class based on the unofficial transcript (or a department adviser if already in a major). If it’s not a prerequisite, you might just be patient.
@bogeyorpar You can submit a request to have the transcript sent to UW through the bellevue college website. It will forward you to their 3rd party who handles the requests. Those people should be able to have the transcript sent to UW, but it can take some time for everything to go through.
