I'm a freshman at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. I'm originally from Northern Virginia and I applied to Virginia Tech, but was wait-listed and then deferred. I'm trying to transfer to UVA, but I'm almost 100 percent positive I won't get in to that.

HS GPA : 3.23
College GPA : 3.24
SAT : 1400 / 1600 , 2010 / 2400 (760 math, 640 verbal, 610 writing)
SAT II : 660 (Math 2), 660 (Chem), 740 (US History)

First Semester
MATH 121 (Calc I) : C
FSSY 113 (Movies and Meaning) : A
CHEM 111 (Chem for Engineers) : A
ENGR 131 (Computer Programming) : B

Second Semester
PHYS 121 (Physics I)
ENGR 145 (Chem of Materials)
MATH 122 (Calc II)
USSO 286 (Environment and Civic Culture)

I'm getting a recommendation from my high school rowing coach (who's a VT alum) and my "Movies and Meaning" professor at Case. The problem is that I'm not sure I'll get into the engineering school with my recs and my C in Calculus. I'm hoping that Case's reputation as a world-class college will help me.

I'm trying to write some kickass essays but we'll see how we do. Tech apparently accepts about 50 percent of their transfer applicants, but its a much smaller pool (about 2,000 apply, 1,000 accept, maybe 800 go). Not sure what the average GPA is (I sucked it up first semester as well).

Does anyone have any idea of my chances? I plan on contacting the Admission Office to explain my situation and my "off the record" chances. I'm really nervous since Tech rejected me the first time around, even though I got into "better" schools like Boston University, Case, and Purdue.

I'd appreciate more feedback though. I know I'm sounding a little insecure, but I was told I would get into Tech easy when applying as a senior in high school and I was rejected.

Yeh the reason you probably didn't get in the first time is because of the gpa, the SAT scores are really good. But I'd say you are looking pretty good, its by no means a lock but you have got a good chance. Yeh, I was applying as a transfer to UVa also but I probably won't get in even with a 3.5 college gpa. But anyways good luck to you.

@ cressida: Honestly, it's not that the school is bad, it's just not the right fit for me. Case is very much for the kind of person who knows exactly what and where they want to be in 5 years. Case has tons of research and volunteer opportunities, but the social and school spirit areas are lacking. It's also a huge school for just 4000 undergraduates (it takes me 20 minutes to walk to class from my dorms) and I've only had two classes under 200 students my freshman year (also a little strange for a small school).

A lot of people come to Case and have a great time. I've met these people. Apparently joining a frat or sorority really helps you have a good time. I'm just not one of those people. I am, by no means, saying you shouldn't attend Case. Case is very study-study school, as opposed to a study-party, or party-party school. If I don't get accepted to VT or UVA, I'm staying at Case and I honestly don't mind that. It's just not your typical college, and therefore you won't get that same college experience. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. I'll can tell you almost everything (Cleveland, freshman classes, SAGES program, volunteer opportunities, clubs, library, dorms, etc.)

I wish I could edit my post, but some new developments.

My college gpa is actually 3.267. Not sure if that makes a difference. Also, I don't have any outstanding ECs in college... I joined a nationality club and a frisbee club team. Is that another problem?
