transfer to yale from brown

Hi,

I would be glad for any advice. I used to be visit these forums often when applying for college the first time around and never figured I'd be back as a sophomore (sry if this post is long)

I entered Brown Univ as a PLME student (their 8 year medical program). After a lot of soul-searching and extreme conflict with my family, I decided to quit the program for many reasons, the primary one being that I realized that I did not in my heart want to be a doctor, and felt I had talents that could be utilized better in other fields. This happened at the end of my freshman year, and the emotional fallout with my family was so severe that I ended up only passing 2 courses that semester. Total I've passed 7 courses at Brown for freshman year and am now a sophomore.

My GPA stands at a 3.5 (3.75 first semester, 3.0 second). I have a lot of experience with community service organizations at Brown (worked in homelessness, STD prevention, coordinator for a relationship abuse coalition this year). I am very interested in art/art theory (but as this was forbidden from me for the greater part of my life- my family is messed up), I've only taken one intro art course so far. I also have a deep interest in poetry and poetic theory (and have been told by my teacher that I'm really talented, so I guess I could submit writing samples) and am taking 2 poetry courses this semester. As a major I would like to pursue cultural/sociological theory.

My reason for transferring- There are a lot of not-so-good memories here, for various reasons, one of which was depression and emotionally abusive relationship during my freshman year, and the family stuff. I'd just like to make a fresh start.

The thing is, I was accepted into Yale as a hs senior. But I presented myself as a completely different person, one really interested in science research and really into medicine. If I applied it would be almost as a completely different person. So what do you all think my chances are of getting into a place like Yale? Do they take into account the fact that I was accepted the first time around?

I think you should definitely apply.

In your application/essay, talk about how you've changed since you first applied to Yale. Basically, mention a lot of what you wrote here about realizing medicine is not for you, deciding to leave the PLME program, your interest in the humanities, etc. Yale will take into consideration that you were accepted the first time around.

Transfer admission to Yale is notoriously difficult. Yale accepted 30/681, or 4.4%, of transfers last year. In order to stand a relatively solid chance of admission, you should aim to do extremely well this semester in all of your classes, especially those you are interested in studying further. Your cumulative GPA should be as high as possible.
