transfer to Yale/Harvard

Hello

I am currently a plebe(freshman) at United States Military Academy at West Point.

my first semester grade at West Point was 3.85/4.0
I am expecting similar grade for the second semester.

My SAT score was 2120. didn't take any sat2(subject tests)
(I am not sure whether u need SAT 1&2 scores when u transfer..)

Will i be able to transfer to yale/harvard?
what is my chance?

i've also heard that civilian colleges dont like service academy people when it comes to "transfer" since it shows that the cadets/midshipemen are quitting their jobs..
is it true? will it affect my chance greatly?

Any thoughts or comments will be sincerely appreciated.

That information is readily available on their websites, it’s best to go to the primary source for this kind of information.

Not true, D1 has a transfer from a service academy in her year at Y.

seriously? a former service academy cadet succeeded transferring to yale?
can u ask ur daughter which service academy he/she is from?
plus, do u no when he/she transferred?
is it before plebe yr over? or after plebe yr? after second yr?

^^ once upon a time, i looked at the yale website and it actually said something about preference being given to army kids, though i have no idea about specifics. i would take a look there

I talked to her and there are actually 2 that transferred her year, one from Navy and one from WP. Sorry, I didn’t ask which year they were in when they transferred, I should be able to find out when she comes home this weekend. It definitely wasn’t before fr year was over as Y doesn’t accept transfers with less than a year of college credit:

http://www.yale.edu/admit/other/transfer/who.html

In a sense, attending a military academy provides a student with a more easily justifiable reason for wanting to transfer because they are so very different from other top colleges.

Thank you so much,

also, when it comes to transfer, do colleges look at college gpa more or class standing?
i have about 3.85/4.00 at west point right now, which is not that high gpa comparatively. However, it would put me about upper 95 percentile in our class at WP.

They ask for class rank on the College Official’s Report, so I assume they take it into account in relation to your gpa. With your gpa from a place like WP, I don’t think you’re going to have much trouble being a qualified candidate based on stats; it’s what they’re looking for beyond the stats that is a mystery and impossible to predict.

Which is more important for you, leaving the academy or going to Harvard/Yale?

If your goal is to leave the academy, please be certain to have some safety schools on your application list.

Good luck!

Evidently, i have some safety schools in my list.

I have Harvard, Yale, Brown, Upenn, UVA, UCB, georgetown, and Umich.
I believe I can hit UMich and UVA for sure. They actually stated they would truly welcome me If i join their community. Also, I’ve seen cadets who had lower Gpa than me succeeded transferring to these schools past yrs.

However, harvard and yale were my dream schools since I was young. When I was in hs senior found out I was waitlisted for both schools, i was so depressed. ended up being in WP. I am mostly satisfied with the atmosphere and life here in WP, but if i can, I want to transfer to H/Y so badly.

entomom, do you kniow what gpa did the former service academy cadet maintain in WP?
and wat else he/she did in WP for Ec and his/her SAT score?

Sorry, I don’t know stats or ECs, but I found out that both transferred after their fr year. Like I said before, I think your gpa is within range of being a competitive candidate; your SAT is not particularly high by HY standards, but that’s too late to change for this application period.

How is your financial situation for the publics? Are you a resident for any of them, or are you prepared to pay full fare for UCB or UMichigan?

Hmm… I don’t think i am competitive enough for sophomore transfer…

my HS gpa was around 3.5 UW. with 9 aps though…
SAT score 2120…

I tried my best since I got here in WP, but i am afraid that my hs grades and records would hold my feet.
Should I try this year anyway?
or should I wait until next year for “junior transfer”?

It’s difficult to tell, applying this year would cost you some time, energy and money, though the first two would go partially towards a jr transfer application if you didn’t get in for this fall.

You need to be really clear about whether or not you want to be at WP. If you don’t intend to graduate from there, you should leave now rather than lingering just to improve your chances of admission at a “dream school” which may not admit you in another year anyway! Please don’t abuse the good faith of the instructors at the academy, of the individual who nominated you for this appointment, or of your fellow cadets by pretending to be someone that you aren’t. It is fine to decide that you don’t want a military career. However, once you have made that decision, you have a moral obligation to leave the academy.

Yale’s deadline for transfer applications has already passed.
