Transfer to...

After some serious introspection, a few anxiety attacks, and a seriously premature midlife crisis I've come to the conclusion that I need to transfer. At the moment I attend GW and have found that unless you are a poli sci or IA major, the school doesn't really have much to offer academically. I love D.C. and my friends and I've met some amazing professors, but I need out. I finished my first year with a solid GPA and some okay extra-curriculars. I plan on completing at least another semester at GW. I'm not completely sure, but I think I would like to pursue computer science with some philosophy on the side.

I'm having real difficulty finding a school that I like and that "fits" though. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind recommending some schools? I was also wondering, since my HS record is severely lacking, would it be more advantageous to apply as a junior transfer than as a spring sophomore transfer (to the schools that allow it)?

My stats are as follows:

High School Valedictorian (graduating class under 10)
3.5 UW 3.7 W
My EC's include varsity Soccer and Basketball, NHS, Keystone, etc.

SAT I 690 V 660 M (two or three tries)
SAT II 720 Lit 690 American History

College GPA 3.74
Some classes I've taken include:
French, International Politics, Philosophical Explanations of Religion, Logic

Class Schedule next semester:
German, Econ, Calc(?), and a political phil class.

EC's:
Classifieds Manager and a reporter at the student newspaper
Kendo Club
I've been working at a law office this summer in D.C.
I'm applying for an internship at the National Security Archives for fall

I've been looking at Rice, Cornell, USC, and Reed (has a computer program in conjunction with UW that I wouldn't be interested in, but I love Reed)

Any help would be great thanks.

I can't speak for the others, but you have a good shot at Rice.

Reed doesn't do spring transfers, and it's unlikely that you can finish in four semesters as a junior fall transfer (it that's important to you). Reed is about fit, so estimating chances is especially tough when transferring. Check out Reed College Admission Office.

Thanks MagiTF and vossron. I'm actually quite familiar with Reed (I've been perusing over their website for the last semester) and would in all likelihood be able to graduate in four years with a degree in philosophy--assuming I took the junior qualifying exam directly after transfering. I love Reed, but unfortunately it doesn't offer comp. science so I'm leaning more toward the other schools. Any other schools someone might recommend?

bump (char)

Carnegie Mellon?

I wish. I actually applied there orignially, but was automatically rejected because I ended up cancelling my SAT II Math scores.

On a sidenote, I hear the area is a bit of a drag too.

Some who like Reed also like Carleton, Grinnell, Oberlin, Swarthmore and UChicago.
