Transfer Transfer Transfer

I am currently a freshman on a full academic scholarship to the top private college in my state and one of the top three in the southeast. Currently I have all As.

Last year I graduated as the valedictorian of a competetive private school (410+) and scored above 2220 on my SAT (top 99 %). I also did well on my AP tests and have like a ton of service and activities. I have been doing research at a neurodegenerative research facility for a year now. I'll probably get published this year.

Basically I hate my school with a passion and my parents forced me to go there to save money, however I have enough for three years and recently received a ton of scholarships (over ten thousand worth).

I want to transfer to Columbia. Do I stand a chance given at it given I got in last year?

Where do you attend now? I would reapply if you really feel that Columbia can be a life changing experience for you. On the other hand, if you are on a full academic scholarship you graduate debt free which leaves a lot of breathing room when graduating. A lot of students become very nervous when graduation, especially from heavy debt, which is pretty much inevitable in New York City, as everything is so ridiculously expensive.

I think if you provide a school name along with major it would be a big help, as the pros and cons can be weighted evenly.

Given that you got in for freshman year, have maintained good grades and do decent research you stand a good chance i'd say.

Sorry, I really don't want to give away what school I go to but I can tell you that I am premed and majoring in biology (I would like to major in neurobiology though). I know I'll have to pay for med school and I currently have enough for three years at any school without financial aid (I definately don't qualify for aid).

What the hell...I go to Vandy and I hate it because l'm close to home and I really don't fit in well with the students. I want to go out of state to grow and finally experience what its like to be on your own without having mom and dad pick you up every weekend. I would also like to do research at another school.

Shrug, I can understand why you wouldn't like Vanderbilt. If you feel uncomfortable at the school I would suggest transferring, if you feel at home at a specific school, it can really enhance the college experience for you. Call the admissions office and find out the exact process, may be a bit easier for the transfer if you were expected only a short while ago. Have you visited the Columbia Campus? The main thing is to make sure you'd be happy at Columbia. Is this CC or SEAS?

thanks, i think it would be cc (isn't seas engineering; does it say on the acceptance letter)--anyway I think I have to reapply though. I just really can't stand my school and it's getting to me.

^if your getting A's at vandy then you have a good chance, transferring is very competitive, but i think your the sort of person they'd take, i.e. doing well but don't fit in the current environment, hopefully they'll see that you'd fit and contribute to columbia, good luck.

ah, i knew it was vandy.

transfering in shouldn't be too much of a problem. do you have your recommendations in order?

I have to get those...should I wait til after the semester though

anyone else...
