If you were applying as "undecided," what would you write about for:

"The statement of purpose will provide an opportunity to explain any extenuating circumstances that you feel could add value to your application. You may also want to explain unique aspects of your academic background or valued experiences you may have had that relate to your academic discipline. The statement of purpose is not meant to be a listing of accomplishments in high school or a record of your participation in school-related activities. Rather, this is your opportunity to address the admissions committee directly and to let us know more about you as an individual, in a manner that your transcripts and other application information cannot convey."

I want to do an internal transfer to business after I (hopefully) get in.
I'm not sure if I should mention that.

Definitely mention that you want to transfer to business. Maybe also mention relevant coursework from HS pertaining to a degree in business, what you liked about those class(es), and how you did in them (only if you did good in them that is). Describe why you want to attend A&M (don't make it some sort of plee), and what your interests are. When they say "extenuating circumstances that you feel could add value to your application", often times they are looking for you to explain a difficulty that you have overcome that would make you stand out over other applicants.

Thanks gstein!
Sadly enough, I didn't do well in HS. But I will talk about something else.
I'm really interested in computers, which is why I want to major in MIS.
I can definitely have a good talk about computers, why I like them and what my interests are.

"often times they are looking for you to explain a difficulty that you have overcome that would make you stand out over other applicants."

The only difficulty I can think of is moving to Texas from Bolivia, learning English and getting used to this culture. It was pretty tough for me.

tinhchoem, i think 380 is fine.
Yeah, single space..
I have seen some pretty short essays around CC.

It is really not too hard to write at least 500 words for an essay. A&M recommends no more than one 8 1/2 x 11 inch page single spaced per essay. However, quantity is not as important as quality. Be sincere. Really enunciate why you want to go to A&M and what you will bring as a student to the university and how you will use your education there to better other's lives. Since there are no face-to-face interviews, the essay is a great way to bring your own voice and personality to the admission officer's attention.

I had a someone told me that the people reading the SoP will skim thru it and it should be precise and straight forward. Evoid over describing the situation with needless words and events.

from mcalvelloxx "often times they are looking for you to explain a difficulty that you have overcome that would make you stand out over other applicants."

i am only writing essay A. the other essay is only used if you are subject for review. Meaning that you if you are denied, they will review your application after the you submit the grades for the classes you are currently taking.

So the SoP should just be about "why you want to go to A&M and what you will bring as a student to the university and how you will use your education there to better other's lives."
?

I'm writing about my life in Cuba, Bolivia and then Texas.
About my language barrier and how I have perhaps become more responsible, care about my grades and why I want to go AM....Idk.

But maybe these are needless events.

tinhchoem, I would write both essays.
you never know...college admissions are very unpredictable.

Yes that's what i've been told. Sop should show "how unique you are, your strength, your goal, what make you stand out against the rest, etc"

[mcalvelloxx], there is no need to write about your life in cuba, just state that you came to texas, your hardship and how u overcome it, what you've learn and how it shaped your personality, why you apply to a&m, your skills.

mention the past quickly, and state your purpose. it is not a memoir so avoid story telling. basically make it simple and to the point.
