Transfer University of Maryland College Park

I just had a small lesson with Kathie Trahan from UMCP this week and she encouraged me to apply to the school of music there. I play flute and I'm a music ed major at George Mason University. I wanted to know a little more about the music program there and how competitive it is to get in or even to get a live audition because flute players need to send a prescreening cd in order to get a live audition. I really want to go to this school, but I don't want to have my hopes up.

My understanding is that University of Maryland is extremely competitive. I also understood that as a matter of policy that UMCP doesn’t allow for practice lessons – so much for my understanding. I’d say give it a try but the UMCP application is one of the more complicated applications; so be prepared to spend some time. Our daughter got into UMCP voice performance program but was put off by the coldness of the school and faculty. Other people have had completely different experiences.

Sample lessons at UMDCP are at the discretion of the faculty on the specific instruments. DS had no trouble scheduling one with the trumpet faculty when he was in high school. The music school has a fabulous facility, but the department is not as large as one might guess. Openings on certain instruments (voice included) can be very limited from year to year.

The OP says he/she is a student at George Mason. Is there any good reason why the OP wants or needs to transfer?

NASM guidelines apply to transfer regulations:

"# It is not ethical for any institution or any of its personnel to recruit you from an institution at which you are enrolled, registered, or to which you have submitted a tuition or matriculation deposit, especially with an offer of financial aid.

Remember, you may seek information about the programs of any institution at any time, and the institution may respond to your inquiry. You are free to attend the institution of your choice at any time you are accepted, as long as certain protocols associated with talent-based financial aid are observed."

These protocols include release from the dean of your curent school, the same as if you changed your mind after May 1 about where you would enroll. Accredited schools have a form based on the NASM guidelines, which must be filled out by your present school and dean/administrator. Otherwise you are ineligible for any merit money for the initial semester.

Good luck, but be careful as your proceed.

Thank you for all your advice and comments. The main reason that I want to transfer is that the band music at GMU is too easy and the ensembles aren’t strong. A lot of the music majors aren’t motivated and don’t care about music. It’s really disappointing and not what I expected. Also, I’m not even studying with the main flute teacher at GMU.

Argh…I thought I wrote a response…

If you are planning to transfer, do NOT put all of your eggs in one basket. Even with transfers on flute, a prescreen is often required. Check your application dates…deadlines for transfer applications are later, but you may find that AUDITION deadlines for an instrument are not.

Also, why is it that you are not studying with the main flute teacher? Was this an audition issue, or was it a lack of space in the studio? If it was an audition issue, that needs to be resolved before you proceed.

Is Anthony Meillo (that is NOT spelled correctly) still the director of bands at GMU? I haven’t seen him in about 5 years, but at that time, he was one of the most highly regarded band conductors in the country.

Also check with UMDCP to make sure that you will be able to study with Kathie Trahan if you are a music education major. I know that on SOME instruments, only the performance majors study with the applied faculty. Music ed majors study with grad students. Just check to be sure.

Yes, I’m definitely looking into all the dates and I’ve sent my prescreening cd in already as well as my music application in already. The college application is the only part that’s left.

I’m also very confused why I’m not studying with the main teacher. I’m actually studying with her daughter. She’s very talented, but I don’t know if I’m learning everything I could be learning. I don’t think it’s because of the audition. The main teacher never heard me play before I was assigned a private teacher, but most likely it’s because of lack of space in the studio. This year there were a lot of freshman flute players. And there might be one more reason too. I heard that my private teacher when I was in high school and the main teacher at GMU don’t like each other at all, but I don’t know if that has any influence on that.

Unfortunately, Anthony Maiello just teaches Conducting classes. I went to one of them and he’s amazing! I really enjoyed the class. Right now Mark Camphouse teaches the Wind Ensemble and Doc Nix and Kilkenny teach the Symphonic Band.

I completely forgot about that! I have to ask and make sure because I don’t know if I want to be taught by grad students even though I’m sure they’re really good.

My son and daughter both played in honors ensembles conducted by Anthony Maiello. Both thought he was one of the best conductors with whom they worked. Their music teacher took his conducting class and also attended several seminars he gave. Reportedly the guy IS amazing.

Good luck to you. Follow Lorelei’s advice regarding what you need to do. One thing you don’t want to do is burn any bridges. The music world is a VERY small one.

Were those ensembles at Mason? Do you have any info on Music Ed at Mason?
My son is high school senior trumpet player interested in Music Education and is applying to Mason. He met with a professor for a private lesson which he really liked but we have not been able to find too much information on their music program.

What made you choose Mason?

fourkids, try following violadad’s useful tips for using the search feature for particular posts/threads on the board (send him a PM if he doesn’t jump in here first!), because I know that there has been a lot of discussion about GM on here and there are current and former students as well as parents you could talk with. Good Luck to your son.

fourkids, if you’re in Virginia, your son should take a look at JMU too. The new performing arts center, opening in 2010 will be incredible, and the music school is very competitive.

[James Madison University - Performing Arts Center](<a href=“Forbes Center for the Performing Arts - JMU”>Forbes Center for the Performing Arts - JMU)

My kids did not play at GMU. Anthony Maiello was a highly sought after guest conductor who often conducted honors ensembles and All State orchestras or bands.

fourkids, if you do a search for “george mason” within this forum, it should pull up 18 threads. None of them are GMU specific threads, but contain mention of GMU’s programs within.

Another potential source of info can be utilizing the Master List threads.

The '09 contains 3 posters with acceptances at GMU, two Music ed flute candidates, (one of which is the OP of this thread) that indicated GMU would be the school they would be attending. The third had a GMU acceptance for oboe performance, but indicated they would attend IU/Jacobs. You can try searching for past posts under those three user names (starlessyoru, picmom and socomom) or try pm’ing them directly.

I scanned the '08 and '07 Master Lists, and didn’t see any GMU acceptances, but you might doublecheck in case I missed something.

As this is the music major forum, the parameters of music based transfer/admissions vary greatly from the typical transfer process.
