Transfer: UUtah or RutgersU? (Geology)

Hello,

I am going to be a junior-level transfer student this Fall, and because my applications were rather late, I am still able to enroll at either the University of Utah or Rutgers University-New Brunswick to study Geology.

Although I am a resident of New Jersey, the high housing costs (and low out-of-state tuition at Utah) have made the cost of attendance about equal between the two Universities.

I have lived in New Jersey for all of my life (and I haven't particularly enjoyed it), so going out to Utah would be a welcome experience. Furthermore, I feel that I would enjoy Salt Lake City much more than I would New Brunswick. Conventional wisdom would also suggest that a school so accessible to various mountain ranges and mining operations would also provide for better learning opportunities both during and after my education, should I stay in Utah.

What has kept Rutgers in my mind, though, is its ranking. It's much higher than Utah's, no matter which source I've used. I know that these rankings are general, and not major specific, but still, the differences are large.

Typically, Rutgers is around 50, whereas Utah is around 125.

Can anyone help me out in choosing between these two schools?

You need to carefully read through the information each program has on its website. Check up on the kinds of research that the different faculty members are conducting. What are their individual areas of interest? It also is perfectly OK for you to contact the career centers on each campus, and ask about job placement.

Wow. It’s amazing how much just quickly leafing through the departments has uncovered for me. Utah is clearly the place to go.

I feel so stupid for not thinking of this earlier, and I know this reply sounds sarcastic, but I’m really that oblivious! I’ve been going through a lot these past couple of months; my head just hasn’t been on straight lately.

Thank you. Really.

You’re welcome!
