High School: 3.09 GPA, 1710 SAT, Many honors and a an AP.
College: I am currently at Purdue University and I am applying after my 1st semester for admission in fall 2010. I have 16 credits and 3.5 GPA for my 1st semester.

I am currently a Computer & Information Technology major switching to Business.

I really don’t know much about transferring, sorry. But I’ve heard that GPA is mostly what they look at. I’m not really sure if they care much about SAT or AP.

By switching to business do you mean you’ll be applying to McCombs? They’ll look at your high school performance as well as college because you’ll only have 30 hours, the further you get from high school the less they look at it. With that in mind, I think getting into McCombs with your stats will be pretty difficult. You’ll likely have a better chance with a less competitive school/major and then transferring internally.

Right, that’s true. What school and major for UT should I apply then? I really want to go to UT for now and later I can internally transfer to McCombs Business School.

You’re already in CIT, so you could do computer science in the college of natural sciences since CNS is pretty easy to get into.

Edit: by pretty easy, I mean less difficult than the other colleges and majors. You’ve got a good GPA at Purdue so your chances appear good for CNS.

i know for a fact that UT will not even look at your application until you have 30 hours completed. My roommate is applying as a transfer and had 29 credits, but they won’t review it until grades are in for this semester.

also, they don’t look at anything from high school if you are applying to COLA as a transfer (im not sure about other schools). I think that if you applied to COLA or natural sciences, with a 3.5 (which is what the transfer office says their average GPA is for transfers) from Purdue you will probably have a good shot. Becuase a 3.5 from Purdue is very different than a 3.5 from say, ACC or another community college. I’m sure they will absolutely take that into consideration. Good luck!

They will look at your app with only 16 completed and the remainder in progress, but you’ll be required to submit your spring transcript in May before they make a final decision regarding admission.

I think sundoll’s statement works. But there is a catch. Suppose you apply into a more popular major at UT. If you don’t have 24 credit hours completed, then you will be held until you have the 24 credit hours completed. So other people have priority before you. When your app qualifies you for review (i.e. completed the 24 hours), that popular major you want may already have all its space for transfer applicants filled.

So in your case, perhaps it is better to wait a semester if you really want your first-choice major. Because if you do internal transfer, then your GPA at UT Austin may not be as high as it was at Purdue. And so perhaps you might not successfully transfer internally into your major the next semester.

Pretty decent chances for COLA Or Natural sciences.

What is computer and information technology, might I ask? Is it computer engineering? computer science? I’m guessing its another name for, or pretty close in content to Management Information Systems.

Your probably going to have a tough time gaining admission to McCombs. Taking and doing well in Calculus would greatly boost your chances.

Um, yea I guess it is pretty similar to Management Information Systems. I am taking technology architecture, systems development… things like that. I hate it, which is why I want to leave.

maybe it is different depending on what major you are applying to, but my roommate applied as a biology major to COLA with 29 credits and they told her they would not even look at her application until she had 30 credits completed. She finished her last ONE credit this past semester, and now UT is reviewing her application (yes, after they already admitted people for Spring 2010). So, she is at a slight disadvantage it seems. Perhaps this is different for different majors?

You can have less than 30 when you apply so long as the remainder are in progress and will be completed prior to the semester you would start at UT, but you won’t get a decision (or perhaps they don’t even review the app) until you submit the transcript for those remaining hours. There are several transfers on this board that were admitted under similar circumstances - I believe Fiyero is one of them, OP you might want to PM him to ask his experience with that.
