transfer worries

Hi,

I'm an aerospace engineering student at a CCC with a GPA of 3.156 as of now. I will be applying this fall and the closer I get to the deadline the more worried I become. I've already given up hope on cal, ucla and ucsd. However I still keep convincing myself that I have a chance at ucsb and uci. My grades have been quite awful, to be honest.
3 Cs in Calcs I - III
Physics 101 - B , Physics 102 - had to drop it (W)
I'll be retaking it this fall, with physics 103 in the spring. I've still got two more math courses as well.
I've yet to take my required computer science courses (will be done by spring 2012)

Please keep in mind that a slew of family issues have gotten in the way, which somewhat added to these poor grades, but since every student has his/her issues, I don't consider that an excuse for my poor performance so far.

My only "hope", if any, was to TAG with one of those schools. However, UCI and UCSB raised their tags to 3.2. Am I ineligible with a 3.156? If I were successful in adding/crashing my speech class over this summer and I know I would've easily gotten an A, I would have a perfect 3.2. Are my chances really gone by one class? Or do they "round up" the gpa?

And if I can't tag, do I have a chance? Am I too late to fix my grade by the fall of 2012 or will they take that into account?

Last question, a bit off topic on this forum, but what about my chances at the cal polys? What other csu's am I eligible for that are solid aerospace eng. schools?

Thank you.

Hi, nice to see someone pursuing aerospace engineering. I was admitted to ucla for this fall as aerospace eng.

ucsb and cal don’t have aerospace engineering, but you can apply as mechanical engineering as I did. both majors require exactly the same pre-requisites. uc’s that have aerospace are uci, ucla, ucsd, ucd. in my opinion, your best bet is uci or ucd through TAG. ucsd has TAG, but aerospace is an impacted major there, so TAG is useless. and Im not sure about whether they include your fall gpa for TAG.

for the purpose of TAG, yes you can take some GE classes to increase your gpa, but schools really look for you major gpa.

you still have 2 more physics, 2 more math, and 1 more computer science class to improve your gpa though they are hardcore classes. uc’s like applicants who finish strong, so you still have chance to prove yourself. also, if you can fit it your schedule, taking engineering courses(statics and electrical engineering) will help you feel what engineering courses are like and can skip those classes at uci. I have to retake those classes because ucla doesn’t accept those engineering classes I took at ccc.

good luck!

You will need a 3.2 at the time of the September filing period to TAG to UCI so I’m pretty positive that is not possible for you. However, for UCSB the 3.2 needs to be reached by the end of Fall so that is within reach if you do well.

Also keep in mind that some UCs (I think UCI and UCSB come to mind) require a GPA in the required classes for your major (last year, it was a 3.0-3.2 at UCSB!). Something to chew on.

I want to encourage you to study engineering  There just aint enough love in that subject lol. Cs in calc may not be hot, but your B in physics sounds promising enough :)

Why not stay another year? :/

Well for one, I can’t really stay another year because this coming fall/spring will be my 3rd in a CCC. I do not wish to stay in a community college any longer.

Now as for taking extra classes, I’ll be trying to take spanish (5 unit class) during the fall so I can somewhat raise my gpa. I am just worried that it’s already too late. Will admissions have a chance to see my improvements before they make their decision?

And yes, engineering is tough. But I do actually find it incredibly interesting and this really is what I want to pursue.
