Hey, I'm currenly a first semester freshman at Amherst College (the LAC not UMass) and I am very unhappy with my decision to come here. So unhappy in fact that im thinking of going to Stony Brook which is near where I live (Long Island, NY) for my second semester. I got into W and L last year but i decided Amherst over W and L. I am doing fairly well academically here and I would be willing to give you my other stats from high school. Would high school stats be very important for a transfer after one year? Also is W and L really hard to get into as a transfer? Would me going to Stony Brook for second semester kill my chances? I want to clarify also that I would be going to Stony Brook because I have been talking to a counselor here and she thinks I could be depressed. I wouldn't be leaving because I have had any problems academically or anything like that. What do you think?

I think high school stats matter if you've been in college less than 2 years, but i do not know for sure, ask around on the transfer board

W&L accepts very few transfers so it won't be easy, but if you got in last year, I'd say it's definitely worth a shot, the admissions counselors are absolutely amazing here, nicest people in the world. Give the admissions office a call, ask to speak to an adcom and explain your situation.

Thank you Dima. Do you know when the admissions office is open?

JRP123 - just a quip here - since you were accepted for this past fall at W&L - you may want to ask the admissions officer if they would/could consider possible acceptance for spring semester - maybe?? maybe not?? - your app may be still be on file there and would only have to updated with your stuff from Amherst possibly - hey - take a shot - couldn't hurt - nothing to loose.

Yeah, I agree with what JeepMOM said. Definitely talk to W&L admissions. I know a kid here who transferred from Occidental. He had a 1310 and maybe a 3.0 while there. As long as you express your interest and your regret for not coming here in the first place, you may have a shot. Good luck and I hope to see you here next year!

PS do you know Erik Andrews by any chance? He's in your class at Amherst; good buddy of mine.

The admissions office is open from 8:30-5 (though I would recommend calling before 4 since that is when the most people are in the office)

Thank you very much for your advice. Yes I have met Erik although I don't know him well. Are you from Maine also?

Yeah, we were very good friends at Greely High School in Cumberland, Maine. Erik is a guy you want to know-- one of the best people you'll ever meet. Maybe he'll change your opinion of Amherst for the better?
