Transfer?

I am currently a 9th grader and am having a difficult time in deciding whether to transfer to a school like exeter or not. I currently go to a good parochial school. Please respond with some insight!

Thanks!!

If you really are interested in boarding schools, you should apply for 10th grade. I came to Phillips andover as a new 10th grader. Alot of kids come to boarding school as new 10th graders.

Just to follow up on that, most boarding schools save extra room for entrance in 10th grade. I know PA allows around 100 kids in as 10th graders (or lowers).

You wouldn’t really be transferring in the traditional sense. If you’re planning to apply to a school like Exeter for tenth grade you should get cracking because the deadline is coming up quick (January) and you may not have time to take the SSATs. Apply to more than one school because there are thousands of applicants going for Exeter and most will be turned down because there is not enough space for them all. Same with other schools.

If you are happy at your present “good parochial school”, then what is your motivation to change schools?

It’s rather late (but not too late) to be just thinking about applying to an uber-competitive BS. Besides the application form, you’ve got the SSAT, teachers recs, essays, parent statement, campus visit & interview to complete. For most top schools, the application deadline is mid-Jan. The application procedure for a top BS is no less burdensome than that of applying to a top university.

And have you given thought to costs? Exeter costs a lot more than parochial school. If you need FA, you need to have your parents fill out the financial aid application forms. Have you discussed your BS ambition w your parents? Are they supportive?

If you are intent on enrolling in a BS next fall, you should pragmatically be looking at more than just big name schools like Exeter, and you need to be doing it very fast!

I agree GMT. What is your motivation. Of course it is a well known school, great teachers and ec’s. Very prestigious and academically rigorous school. If what’s holding you back is adjusting, I would not worry about it, I would think exonians are very welcoming(exonians fell free to attest to this).
