Transfer

How hard is it to transfer into Northwestern? I know that they usually have a 15 -20 % admit rate for transfer students, but what is the applicant pool like? How important are high school grades? I would like to double major. Is it better to apply to the School of Communications or the College of Arts and Sciences? According to their website, enrollment into the School of Communication may be very limited.

Past Transfers: Where did you transfer from? What was your experience? Did you find it hard to begin your experience at Northwestern as a Sophmore or Junior, rather than as a freshman?

Thanks for the help!

slightly less competitive than the freshman applicant pool, but the process is more selective. all-in-all it's comparable to freshman admissions. the average college GPA of a transfer student is a 3.7. many from elite schools

i got in with a low high school GPA, but most others seemed to have done well in high school, i think it's all how you frame it.

Thanks for the info elsijfdl! I wonder if transfering into the sophomore class of 2011 will be hard considering the significant increase in applications this year. Does anyone else have any information or advice?

Search for the group "Northwestern Transfers" on facebook. You should be able to get a good idea of where admits come from by browsing through the members list of the group. Quite a few transferred to NU from other universities in Illinois, most notably UIUC. Many others transferred from prestigious private universities across the country, but ones that are ranked below NU in US News. Few admits seem to have transferred to NU from universities ranked higher than NU in US News.

Thanks Blaze! I checked the group out, read many of the wall posts, and it certainly was helpful.

For the most recent application cycle, College Confidential saw a significant number of admits and few rejections. Of course, the pool is probably stronger here than overall, but don't let the ~20% acceptance rate scare you. If you have good stats, you've got a shot. NU also seems to be able to meet transfer housing requests and has a late transfer deadline.

As normal, brand gave some good input.

Yup! Housing for transfers was excellent this year. There were many different dorms we could request, and I'm almost certain that every transfer who wanted Housing got it. (although not necessarily their first choice)

Plenty of housing, a May 1st deadline, lenient academic requirements, and an unusually generous acceptance rate makes Northwestern one of the most transfer friendly top CC univeresities, at least for those transfers who don't need financial aid anyways.

Haha yep! That little disclaimer is the reason I was incapable of applying and is certainly something to take into consideration. I have heard of some CC members receiving FA in the form of grants/scholarships, but to my knowledge they were of considerably low income. Per NU's website, NU gives very little "free" money to transfer students for their first year, and Lord knows I needed free money.

Hey I was admitted as a transfer to NU this year. I had roughly a 3.7 GPA at the University of Arizona, however a 4.6 in high school among other things...I just found it curious that I was not even waitlisted during the freshmen admission process, but was admitted via transfer. So far it appears as though NU really wants their students to succeed. Whenever you call and need to get something done, such as registering for classes over the phone or requesting information about your financial account, everyone is ready and willing to help you! Now we just have to wait until September, when we will truly find out what NU is all about.

i heard NU aid is awful. I want to apply but my dad makes over 200K so they probably won't give me anything...my dad does not contribute any money to my education..
