Transfer?

Okay, so I want to transfer to notre dame as a sophomore next fall from stanford. Given my mediocre grades (but good effort) at Stanford, I'm worried they won't take me just on the basis of my grades at Stanford. I'm checking in with a 3.3 on the quarter system with one quarter left in progress that ends in June. I'm not really sure how my grades will turn out yet. Now at ND, I'm a double legacy, and it feels like home. I've also got good high school grades, good SAT scores, and I got in there last year. Hopefully they'll realize that and see that I would be better fit for that environment. But then again, they say college grades are the most important thing so I'm wondering if they're going off of the "What have you done for us lately?" principle.

So what do you guys think?

I think that with a good enough GPA they'd be more than happy to take you. Accepting a transfer from such an awesome school would probably be something that they'd like to do. Especially if you expressed in your essay your love for ND.... I think you'll be fine with that!

Hey Heya, I transferred to ND in the Fall 2003 so I know transfer admissions well. I certainly thing you have a shot but I must admit that I haven't heard of anyone getting in with below a 3.5 GPA from any school. Being a double legacy and coming from Stanford though has to help. What are you studying, as that also will have a big impact on how your GPA looks. Also, did you match the first year of studies curriculum?

lol, what am I doing? I can try to talk to you here but what may be easier is if you email me. You can do that through my profile or just PM me there with your email address and I will write you back. Best of luck too you, let me know if I can help!

What are your reasons for wanting to transfer to ND? I’m curious because Stanford is such a dream school for so many; what didn’t you like about it?

Your GPA may not be too low considering it's from Stanford. I also agree that they would probably like to take a student transfer from such a highly regarded school. But I also agree your courses would have to match the First Year of Studies pretty closely.

Hi cookiemom,

My main reason is that Stanford just doesn't feel like home and Notre Dame does. I like the Catholic atmosphere at Notre Dame (stanford is the opposite of a Catholic atmosphere). I also like that ND is only an hour and a half drive from my house whereas Stanford is a four hour flight. Also the people are friendlier at Notre Dame (or at least it seems that way for me based on my background it's easier to connect with people). And finally, Notre Dame is a huge part of my life since both of my parents went there and I grew up on it. Also, There's a sense of community I feel at Notre Dame while Stanford seems more like it's "every man for himself." At Stanford, most people I've encountered are more interested in trying to double major/minor/B.A/M.A. etc than they are interested interested in getting to know people. I know Notre Dame is not like that even though it is still an excellent school.

Yeah, it looks like I will have to do a summer school science course to complete the requirement. The admissions coordinator said that was all i needed. It's kind of a shame because stanford and notre dame have very different first year requirements. I really think I would have done better if the stanford requirements were more straightforward like the ND first year of studies. A typical Stanford freshman class is something with an abstract liberal agenda like "Thinking with Nature" whereas Notre Dame classes seem more objective which I like.

Good Luck with the transfer. My S was interested in both Stanford and Notre Dame and wasn't sure which one he preferred. He ended up at Notre Dame and is having a great experience, and you're right everyone is really friendly.
