Transfer?

Hey, everyone!

My name's Jessica and I'm a first semester sophomore at Quinnipiac University. Like most students attending QU, I have--perhaps unreasonably so--the desire to transfer to our prestigious neighbor university, Yale. I thought I'd offer you some basic information about myself to get some feedback regarding the transfer application process before continuing my quest.

As I stated before, I'm currently a sophomore at a four-year institution. I'm a Psychology major, although I'm not sure that makes much of a difference. My college GPA is a 3.5 (I know, I know, it's not good) and my high school GPA was around a 3.7-3.8. My scores on my SAT were, cumulatively, a 1680, with a 580R, 490M, and 610W.

I feel that my best chance at even coming close to getting into an institution such as Yale would be a stellar essay; I'm actually rather good at writing and, more importantly, I'm super passionate about Yale being the only school for me. I am currently a research assistant for the Psychology Department at Yale, so I've had some personal experience working with some of the graduate students and professors there. The environment is absolutely unmatched to anything I've experienced in my life. It was certainly the catalyst for getting me interested in the Yale transfer process in the first place.

As far as college extracurricular activities go, I'm involved in many things: Habitat for Humanity, Pre-Law Society, Student Programming Board, work study (research assistant at Quinnipiac's Law School), Psychology Club, Read to Grow, among other volunteer-based work. During high school, I was equally, if not more so, involved in clubs and community service. (I'm certainly not going to drone on forever to you about everything I've done, as that would probably put you all to sleep--just realize that the clubs/service I've listed probably reflect about half of my total involvement.)

I know that my chances are far from good; however, I do appreciate honest opinions on my chances. If there is even the smallest possibility I could get in, I may apply. At this point, I still haven't made up my mind. Let me know your thoughts; they are most valued.

Jessica- the admissions office will still look carefully at your SATs, which are way below the level of admitted students. They weight those heavily in order to ensure that new students can handle the academic load. You might want to really concentrate on improving your QU GPA, and apply to a Yale graduate program. You could start prepping for the GRE in the summers, aiming for competitive numbers. Best of luck.

Not happening

Truthfully I’m going to say your chances of getting in are EXTREMELY low. You have to realize there acceptance rate is exceedingly small (like a 3% acceptance rate I believe?). To get in, you need to stand out. And truthfully, a good GPA with low SAT scores probably won’t cut it when there will be other applicants with 4.0’s and near perfect SAT scores.
