transfer

Hi,
I'm a piano major, incoming freshy.
If I want to transfer to a music school from a music school ( that I have already been accepted for the first time but decided not to go) how does the process work? I heard that it is really hard to transfer, especially in music but if i have been accepted earlier, would that give me an advantage? How hard is it to transferrrrrrr?

ALSO,

I heard the you are not allow to go to school different from the one that you have deferral for a year while you are taking a gap. Is that correct?

My D did this after freshman year. Although all her credits “transferred”, but the second school had a different music theory track. She had to take additional music theory classes and that resulted in her adding on a semester. From what I understand, she was lucky that all of her performance credits transferred.

In an audition driven admit process, you will be competing against the current pool of applicants, which may be stronger or weaker than the pool you competed against initially. There are often fewer transfer slots available than there are slots for incoming freshmen.

The only benefits could be knowing a familiar face or three among the panel, and some familiarity with the institution’s audition process.

What you heard is not necessarily relevant. What is important is that the specifics as to what is and is not permissible come directly from the school that defers you .

I have heard of at least one case of someone who was accepted by music school A; went elsewhere for freshman year; decided to transfer music school a, but was rejected as a transfer student, even though she had been previously accepted.

Performance faculty are well aware that a year can make a major difference in the performance level of an auditioning student…for the good and for the bad. There are no guarantees.

So, I think the idea developing here is do everything in your power to go where you WANT to go, and don’t take transferring for granted. But if finances are preventing you from going where you WANT, talk to the school you WANT to go to and ask if they can defer you for financial reasons for a year and if they’ll accept you as a transfer student. Can’t hurt to try if that’s what’s going on – we can’t tell from your post what’s prompting your question.

jp0710, I remember your post “All because of $$$$$$” and I think that it you’re that crazy about studying at MSM, you should definitely try to appeal your scholarship if you havent already. You never know what it might bring.

Maybe I’m just overthinking this but isn’t it a bit delicate to transfer. I would be concerned about applying to a school while being a freshman at one other. Are you sure your teachers from the school you are will agree to write you the recommendations or that you’re relation with them will be good/close enough to do this ? What if you don’t get in ? Won’t they hold a grudge against you for telling them their not your first choice and that you’d rather be somewhere else ? Won’t you have to prepare different pieces for the audition and for your juries ? Isn’t it going to distract you for having a good freshman year, preparing for competitions and summer festivals, ect…
