I go to an excellent university. The Deans say I am not allowed to live in the dorms for at least a year because I am mentally ill and a "disruptive influence." This means I have to live with my sister, who fights with me and really does not like having a roommate. I have no guarantee that the Deans will allow me to live in the dorms at the end of the year. Should I transfer to a university of lower quality?

I’m confused. Are you a freshman? Did you know this when you enrolled in the school?

I’m a sophomore returning from a medical leave.

Aggravated,

I am just guessing that your behavior prior to your medical leave is the reason that the deans have suspended your dormitory privileges for a year. The deans have to consider providing the optimum environment for all of the students in the dorms, and unfortunately for you they are considering the interests of the many other students as more important than those of one student.

Why don’t you meet with the deans and agree on the criteria you must meet to move back in to the dorms? And then put a plan in to action that will make sure of you achieving the required criteria. Perhaps they would reach a compromise with you–maybe you could move in next semester if you can prove that you have met their stated criteria and would be successful living in the dorm environment at the end of this semester.

I don’t think that the inability to get along with your sister in her apartment will impress the deans as a reason to let you iive in the dorms, though.

And why would you have to transfer to a lower quality school? Could you find housing at the campus you are at for an affordable price? Your sister apparently did. In the meantime, could you minimize your time spent at the apartment–you know, get up in the morning, go out to classes and study at the library or other locations on campus, go hang with your friends, do your usual extracurriular involvements, etc., and just come back later in the evening. Or, could you transfer to an equivalent school?
