transfering after 1st year

Son is a d1 baseball player considering transfering. Anyone have any insight on how this process happens? Still wants to play, but the school hasn't been the right fit.

You have to get a release first from your current coach/school that will allow you to contact other programs, this is very important because you can really mess up the opportunity to transfer if you do not. I am not sure if there is a rule in baseball that if you transfer in same conference you have to sit for a year (it becomes a red shirt year). But if he is honest with the coach and hopefully the coach feels the same way for your sons sake, he ought to make it easy for him to look elsewhere. Just get the release!!!

imafan,

I suggest you (or son) read this cover to cover, and call the NCAA with specific questions that pertain to your son. First, your son needs to determine if he is eligible to transfer. The Guide covers generalities, but as momof2010 suggests it is most important to follow the process and get his release from the current college if that is his intent.
Truthfully, I would think long and hard about this. Transfers for D1 baseball players can be tough especially if your son has to sit a year. I know MANY baseball players that have not been happy with a coach or D1 program after their first year. 35 roster spots and 9 position players can make it very difficult for freshmen…I totally understand. There are options, and the Tranfer Guide will spell them out for you. Best of luck, and feel free to PM me if you want to bounce something by someone.
