I'm looking to transfer but I already missed the deadline for transferring for the Fall, so I would have to transfer in the spring. I just finished my freshman year and didn't find the college I attended to be all I thought it would be. Has anyone transferred second semester of their sophomore year? I worry about not being able to make friends and not adjusting as well as if I transferred in the fall. Is there a big difference between transferring in the fall and spring? Any advice?

I was considering transferring in the Spring '12 semester but
i) most schools I wanted to transfer to do not accept Spring transfers
ii) it would be quite a hassle to attend Fall '11 semester at my current college and then switch to another campus the following semester

I don’t know of anyone who has transferred in the Spring semester, but I am sure that there must be some such persons on CC.

Are you in a complete hurry to transfer? If you don’t have a compelling reason to want to leave so soon then you should just wait and transfer in Fall '12. Good luck.

My best friend just did this and is now transferring back to her old school. It was extremely difficult to get classes and also to meet people because of the spring transfer. If the school has a spring orientation program though and accepts a lot of transfers then i think it would be fine as long as your living somewhere around other students.

I transferred the second semester of my sophomore year, and was concerned about the same things as you. I was lucky because my university had a 2 day midyear orientation for transfer students as well as freshman who were starting a semester late. I wouldn’t worry too much about problems making friends midyear, or adjusting as well. Any transfer would still have to make new friends and adjust. I joined some extracurricular activities, talked to people in my classes and my dorm, got a job on campus, and felt right at home within weeks.

The only tough thing for me was the quickness of it all. I applied for a transfer in late September, interviewed in October, was accepted in November, and got my finaid in December. A little over a month later, I moved in. Things went very, very fast for such a huge change (women’s liberal arts college to private coed research university). However, in the end my decision was right for me, so the super fast adjustment time was worth it. I only applied to 1 school, and knew I’d go there if I was accepted and got X amount of finaid. I’d say whether you apply depends on the reasons you want to transfer, and how certain you are of where you want to go. I’d also talk to the admissions office of any schools you’re considering to see whether they accept transfers midyear, and if there’s a transfer admissions counselor (there is at my university).
