I am currently at Columbia University, I intend to transfer in order to pursue a major which is not offered here so I have a legitimate reason for doing so. My gpa isnt amazing, 3.4, but I'm also at Columbia which I feel gives me a competitive advantage. How hard is it to go fro Columbia to other schools like Brown, Dartmouth, Penn and even drop a bit within the ivies to Cornell. Would it be relatively feasible with a good recomendation? (plus since I know they consider it I got into cornell in hs app, i didnt apply to the others, and i'm also hispanic).
Anyone have any experience in this?

Since you are changing your major, you need to cast a wider net than just the Ivies. Take a look around at your other options as well.

you won’t be “dropping” if you come here. what major are you thinking of?

hmm, wonder what majors Dartmouth and Brown have that Columbia doesn’t have…
Anyway admissions is done holistically at all these places, nobody can say for sure that you are certain to be admitted or that you have no chance.

It would be a russian major, technically columbia has it but because of the beauracracy inherent in columbia i need to submit a transfer application to do it, so i want to back up my chances, I also plan to send a transfer application to Vandy, I said dropping to cornell because i got in there out of high school, sme with vandy, didnt apply to the others

oh, so you’re not currently in the College. And from other CC threads, intercollege transfer is no trivial matter there, it is far from merely a formality of submitting the transfer request. I see.

FWIW, Cornell used to have a really good department in Russian, a friend took many courses in it. Don’t know about now, though these things tend to perpetuate .

Well if you think Cornell is a ‘drop’ then I have no idea what you’ll think of Northwestern, but we happen to have a great Slavic department. I should know, that’s my major. Northwestern also has a higher transfer rate than most top-20’s.
Other great schools that offer Russian would be UChicago and Stanford. While a great many other schools offer a Russian/Slavic major, it seems like you’re concerned with prestige. But you should look into those three.

Further, Cornell is having problems with their Slavic department, from what I’ve read (A 21st Century Hitchcock? Not Quite. | The Cornell Daily Sun) So I would reconsider that choice.

I actually transferred from Columbia to Dartmouth and was also accepted at Brown and Duke. I also had a 3.4 GPA, but I had great recs and really made an impact on the campus when I was there. So I think I packaged myself well enough to get beyond the okay GPA.

Thank you Slipper, and by packaged do you mean EC’s?
